Cadia

Cadia was the Imperium’s fortress world at the mouth of the Eye of Terror, and for ten thousand years it was the single most important military posting in the galaxy. It’s the planet that broke during Abaddon’s Thirteenth Black Crusade, and its loss reshaped the Imperium forever.

What Cadia was

Cadia sat in the Segmentum Obscurus, right on the edge of the Eye of Terror. It wasn’t just a fortress world, it was the fortress world, the one place the Imperium absolutely could not afford to lose.

The reason is geography. The Cadian Gate is the only stable, permanent route into or out of the Eye of Terror wide enough for battlefleets to pass through. Every Chaos fleet that wanted to reach the wider galaxy had to go through Cadia first. That made it the choke point the Imperium spent ten millennia fortifying.

Before the Thirteenth Black Crusade, its population sat somewhere between 250 million and 850 million, depending on the source. Almost everyone who lived there was part of the war machine in some way.

The Cadian Pylons

Cadia’s strangest feature was the Pylons: 5,810 intact structures scattered across the surface, with roughly 2,000 more either buried or damaged. Nobody knows who built them. They predate human colonisation by a very long way.

Each Pylon stands exactly half a kilometre tall and extends a quarter kilometre underground. No two are identical in design, but they all share narrow tunnels machined into them, each about the width of a man’s head and exactly 250 metres long.

The Adeptus Mechanicus never managed to study them properly. Auspex scans couldn’t penetrate their surfaces, and servitor probes sent into the tunnels just vanished. Most Imperial scholars believe the Pylons are the reason the Cadian Gate exists at all, holding the Warp back by their presence.

The fall of Cadia

Abaddon the Despoiler launched no fewer than thirteen Black Crusades out of the Eye of Terror, and Cadia was the target of most of them. It held every time, until the Thirteenth.

During that final assault, the Warp storm Baphomael expanded and swallowed the edges of the Cadian System. The Pylons started vibrating, almost imperceptibly, and microscopic fractures appeared across their surfaces. They were resonating at an amplitude similar to a Gellar Field, as if straining against something.

Cadia broke. The planet was destroyed, transformed into a hellish Daemon World, and later conquered by the Iron Warriors. Only about three million survivors got off the surface. It’s now classified as a Dead World, a Daemon World, and a Martyr World depending on which Imperial record you read.

Why Cadia still matters

The loss of Cadia didn’t just cost the Imperium a planet. It opened the Cadian Gate. With the Pylons gone and the planet shattered, the Warp poured through the gap and the Great Rift tore the galaxy in half. That’s the event that defines the current setting.

Cadia’s legacy lives on in its people. Cadian Shock Troops regiments were spread across the galaxy when the planet died, and those survivors became some of the most hardened and respected soldiers the Astra Militarum has left. Their training, discipline, and stubbornness are the planet’s real inheritance.

The name Cadia is still used as a rallying cry. For a lot of Imperial citizens, it’s shorthand for holding the line against impossible odds, and for the cost of failing to.
