Caliban is the lost homeworld of the Dark Angels, a death world of monster-haunted forests where Lion El’Jonson grew up. It blew apart during the Horus Heresy and its ruins were later remade as the planet Wyrmwood.
What Caliban was
Caliban sat in the Segmentum Obscurus, a death world wrapped in dense forest and cut off from Terra for roughly five thousand years during the Age of Strife. Its human settlers lived under a feudal system, and the wilderness around them was genuinely hostile.
The worst of it were the Great Beasts, giant predators that made the forests lethal. Luther described Caliban as having a vicious intelligence running through its woods and wildlife, one that hated the humans living there. Some sources suggest the planet’s warp-taint came from an ancient device buried in its core, a twin to the Tuchulcha engine called Ouroboros, though that’s not confirmed.
The knightly orders and the Lion
To survive, the nobility founded knightly orders. The most famous was simply called The Order, unusual because it took in commoners as well as nobles. Lion El’Jonson and Luther both served in it, rising through the ranks until Jonson became Grand Master.
Before the Emperor ever reached Caliban, Jonson and Luther led a campaign that united almost every order and wiped out the Great Beasts. It’s the achievement that made Jonson a legend on his own world.
- Calibanites weren’t high-tech, but surviving STC fragments let them build crude bolters, chainswords, energy weapons and power armour.
- The Order’s open recruitment set it apart from its rivals.
- Luther was Jonson’s closest comrade long before the Legion arrived.
The Emperor arrives
When the Emperor found Caliban, everything changed. Jonson disbanded the knightly orders and took command of the Dark Angels, then left to fight in the Great Crusade.
Caliban itself was rebuilt for war. Forests were cleared, mines opened and huge manufactories raised to supply the Legion. Villages and towns gave way to arcologies housing millions. Nobles who lost their peasant farmers to the new order turned to rebellion, and that resentment never really went away.
| Stage | What happened |
|---|---|
| Pre-Imperial | Feudal world, knightly orders, Great Beasts |
| Great Crusade | Forests cleared, industry built, orders disbanded |
| Heresy | Caliban torn apart in the fighting |
| After | Ruins reformed as Wyrmwood |
Destruction and Wyrmwood
Caliban didn’t survive the Horus Heresy. The world was destroyed, shattered in the war that split the Dark Angels, and it’s officially listed as a former Legion homeworld rather than a living planet.
The story doesn’t quite end there. Caliban’s remains were later reformed as Wyrmwood, so the old homeworld still has a place in the galaxy, just not the one anyone expected.
