The Hadex Anomaly

The Hadex Anomaly is a red, starless wound in space at the core of the Jericho Reach, on the Eastern Fringe. It doesn’t behave like a normal Warp storm, and that’s exactly why it scares the Imperium.

What the hadex anomaly actually is

Nobody’s managed to file it under a tidy category. The Hadex is a spatial anomaly of unknown origin, sometimes called the “red hole”, and scholars who study it admit it might even be sentient.

What it seems to do is leak time. Not metaphorically, either. The anomaly pulls moments from other dimensions into the southern spiral arm of the galaxy, and it occasionally just reorders the sequence of events around itself. Attempts to monitor or control it tend to fail.

The stars caught in its influence are contaminated by it and are known as the Charon Stars. Around the edges of the Hadex, ghost ships sit trapped in what looks like a stasis field, stuck there and going nowhere.

How it behaves

The Hadex expands and recedes without any clear rhythm. Over decades it can swallow entire solar systems and then unveil them again, which makes long-term settlement anywhere near it a gamble.

It first manifested in 656.M40, and it did so instantly across the whole of Ultima Segmentum, no matter the distance from the source. That alone breaks every natural law the Imperium knows about light and distance.

  • Location: core of the Jericho Reach, Eastern Fringe
  • First appeared: 656.M40
  • Also called: the “red hole”
  • Nearby contaminated stars: the Charon Stars
  • Known worlds in its reach: Bulwark, Coranin, Durell, Venkrous

Is it a Warp storm?

Sort of, but that label doesn’t really fit. Even before the Great Rift, scholars studying the Hadex would loosely call it a Warp storm because it’s clearly a Warp and realspace overlap. After the Great Rift appeared, the galactic map listed it as one outright.

The trouble is that calling it a Warp storm undersells it. The Hadex doesn’t just bleed the Warp into reality, it messes with time itself, and that’s a different kind of problem entirely.

Why it matters

The Hadex sits at the heart of the Jericho Reach, which makes it a permanent hazard for anyone operating in that region, including the Deathwatch and the Achilus Crusade.

It’s also one of the clearest examples of something in 40k that the Imperium simply can’t explain, categorise, or fight. You can’t purge a hole in time. You can only watch it and hope it doesn’t decide to expand.

Key facts

  • The Hadex Anomaly is a spatial anomaly of unknown origin at the core of the Jericho Reach.
  • It’s nicknamed the “red hole” and may even be sentient.
  • It appears to spew time from other dimensions and can reorder the flow of events.
  • It first manifested in 656.M40, visible instantly across Ultima Segmentum.
  • It expands and recedes with no clear pattern, covering and revealing whole solar systems over decades.
  • Stars contaminated by it are called the Charon Stars, and ghost ships sit trapped in stasis around its edges.

FAQ

Is the Hadex Anomaly a Warp storm?

It’s often categorised as one, and after the Great Rift the galactic map listed it that way. But it’s really a Warp and realspace overlap that distorts time, so the label doesn’t capture what it does.

When did the Hadex Anomaly appear?

It first manifested in 656.M40 and became visible instantly across Ultima Segmentum, regardless of distance from it.

Where is the Hadex Anomaly?

At the core of the Jericho Reach, on the Eastern Fringe of the galaxy.
