Constantin Valdor

Constantin Valdor was the Emperor’s first and greatest Custodian, the Captain-General of the Legio Custodes. He fought through the Unification Wars, the Great Crusade and the Horus Heresy at the Emperor’s side, and then vanished without a word.

Who Valdor was

Valdor is remembered as the Emperor’s Spear and the First of the Ten Thousand, the title given to the leader of the Adeptus Custodes. He stood as tall as a Primarch and matched them in combat, and he served as the Emperor’s bodyguard, counsellor and confidant.

His early life is a mystery. He was born on Terra during the Age of Strife, and the Emperor supposedly moved armies to find him after killing his parents. Valdor himself doesn’t recall whether he was genuinely the first Custodian or just the first one made successfully.

The Unification Wars and the Great Crusade

Valdor commanded armies during the Unification Wars, fighting at Maulland Sen alongside the Thunder Warriors. What he saw there worried him, and he grew troubled about what would become of them.

By the end of the wars he stood as part of Terra’s ruling triumvirate with the Emperor and Malcador. When the Palace Coup broke out, he faced the rebel Thunder Warriors and their allies, deploying the first Legiones Astartes into battle. He killed the Thunder Warrior general Ushotan, though he took no pleasure in it, and let the rebel leader Kandawire retire in peace.

When Malcador revealed the Primarchs were still alive, Valdor was baffled. He thought the Arch-Enemy would only have spared them to corrupt them.

The Horus Heresy and after

When Horus turned, Valdor’s role changed. Here was an enemy who understood part of the Emperor’s mind and had the power to threaten Terra itself.

He fought at the Battle of Prospero and during the Siege of Terra. What happened to him after the Emperor fell is debated. The Imperium’s records go quiet, and legend says he simply walked away from the Palace, offering no explanation, never to be seen again.

Personality and wargear

Valdor had no interest in glory. He never boasted or sought attention, and he seemed untouched by greed or ambition. Whether that was his own nature or something built into him, he lived for duty alone.

He wore the golden armour of the Custodes and carried the Apollonian Spear, a weapon that could be thrown and recalled, among other relics of his office.
