Khârn the Betrayer

Khârn the Betrayer is a Chaos Space Marine of the World Eaters Legion and the greatest mortal champion of Khorne, the Blood God. He’s been killing his way across the galaxy since the Horus Heresy, and he’s still going.

Who Khârn is

Khârn was born on Terra in the late 30th millennium and inducted into the War Hounds, the Legion that would become the World Eaters. He rose to Captain of the 8th Assault Company, then became equerry to his primarch, Angron.

After the Horus Heresy he turned to Chaos and devoted himself to Khorne. Today he’s counted as the Blood God’s mightiest champion, second only to the daemon primarch Angron in raw power. Some sources go further and call him the avatar of Khorne, rage and bloodlust made flesh.

Why he matters

Khârn is the yardstick for Khorne champions in Warhammer 40k. If a character wants to prove themselves, beating Khârn is the benchmark, and almost nobody manages it.

He also anchors the World Eaters’ identity. His story shows what the Legion’s Butcher’s Nails and devotion to Khorne do to a warrior over ten thousand years.

The name ‘the Betrayer’

Khârn earned the title at the Battle of Skalathrax, where the World Eaters Legion fractured into the warbands it’s known for today. Accounts differ on exactly what happened there and who he betrayed, but the name stuck and the Legion never really recovered.

That’s the irony of Khârn: he’s called a betrayer, yet he’s also the most loyal son Angron ever had.

Weapons and abilities

Khârn fights with Gorechild, a massive chainaxe once wielded by Angron himself, and Gorefather is sometimes mentioned in older accounts. He wears no helmet, which is either bravado or a sign that the Butcher’s Nails have left him with nothing left to lose.

The Nails are the key to his power. They were implanted into his brain despite a fatality rate that should have killed him. They flood him with rage and make him nearly impossible to stop in close combat.

  • Gorechild: Angron’s old chainaxe, now Khârn’s signature weapon
  • Butcher’s Nails: brain implants that drive him into a killing frenzy
  • No helmet: he fights bare-headed, which says a lot about him
  • Second only to Angron among Khorne’s servants

Khârn and the wider lore

Khârn connects to the Horus Heresy, the World Eaters, and the Chaos pantheon all at once. If you’re reading about Angron, the Butcher’s Nails, or Khorne’s champions, Khârn is usually the thread that ties them together.

He’s also a rare example of a named Chaos Space Marine who’s been active from the Heresy right up to the present setting. That makes him one of the setting’s longest-running antagonists.
