Scabeiathrax

Scabeiathrax is one of Nurgle’s oldest and most favoured Great Unclean Ones, a bloated mountain of rot who only leaves his plague pit when the god of decay needs something ruined. If you’ve seen his name in Horus Heresy lore, it’s because he was one of the daemons unleashed during the siege of Terra.

Who is Scabeiathrax?

Scabeiathrax is an ancient Great Unclean One, the greater daemon type that serves Nurgle. He’s counted among the Plague God’s most favoured servants, which for a daemon of his size and age is saying something.

He answers to a pile of titles: Papa G’aap, Lord of the Blighted Pit, Maggotspore, and the Wind of Nurgle. Each one hints at a different side of him, from the almost affectionate nickname to the idea of him drifting through the galaxy as a literal carrier of plague.

The Blighted Pit and the Blade of Decay

Most of the time Scabeiathrax wallows in the Blighted Pit, one of the largest plague pits in Nurgle’s Garden. He stays there until he’s called into realspace to spread filth and corruption somewhere in the material universe.

He carries the Blade of Decay, a crude rusting cleaver soaked in supernatural rot. Anything it touches ages and decays almost instantly. Wounds from it turn infected on contact, and flesh sloughs away while the victim is still standing.

  • Home: the Blighted Pit, a vast plague pit in Nurgle’s realm
  • Weapon: the Blade of Decay, a rusted cleaver that accelerates rot and infection
  • Effect wherever he goes: a trail of disease, filth, and corruption

Scabeiathrax in the Horus Heresy

During the Horus Heresy, the Thousand Sons summoned Scabeiathrax and other greater daemons into realspace during the Battle for Terra. After the Lion’s Gate Spaceport fell to the Traitors, those daemons were sent to tear down the Colossi Gate and break into the Imperial Palace.

They managed to wreck the gate’s outer defences, but the White Scars’ Stormseers and the Adeptus Custodes destroyed the daemons before they could finish the job. Scabeiathrax’s role in the siege comes from the novel Saturnine.

Why he matters

Scabeiathrax is a good example of what a named greater daemon looks like in 40k lore: more than a statline, but a character with a home, a weapon, and a history. He also ties Nurgle’s daemons directly into one of the setting’s biggest events.

His involvement at Terra shows that the Horus Heresy wasn’t just a war between Legions. It was also a moment when the Ruinous Powers emptied parts of their realms into realspace, and Scabeiathrax was one of the things they let out.
