The Battle of Phall was a fleet engagement in the Horus Heresy’s early days, pitting the Imperial Fists against the Iron Warriors. It ended in a draw that helped drag the war out for years instead of a quick traitor win.
Background: the Retribution Fleet
After intercepting the Death Guard ship Eisenstein, Rogal Dorn learned of Horus’s betrayal at Isstvan III. He split his legion: he’d take the veteran companies to Terra to warn the Emperor, while Sigismund would lead the rest as a Retribution Fleet to strike back at the traitors.
But Sigismund never took command. Euphrati Keeler warned him of the cataclysm coming to Terra, so he chose to stay at Dorn’s side. Command fell to Captain Yonnad.
The fleet was a third of the Imperial Fists’ strength: over 561 warships and 300 companies of Astartes, plus Astra Militaris from Sol and Saturnyne Reserve Fleet elements. Chaos-wrought Warp storms denied astropaths navigation and communication, destroying about a third of the fleet and killing half its astropaths. Yonnad died during the voyage, and Alexis Polux, his greatest pupil, took over.
Unable to reach Isstvan, the fleet found a break in the storm at the Phall System: two peaceful agri-worlds, Phall I and II. They set up a temporary base and waited.
Operations at Phall
For 141 days the Imperial Fists drilled and prepared. Then the Iron Warriors arrived and attacked straight away.
The Iron Warriors had more ships, but the fight went badly for them. The Imperial Fists inflicted heavy losses and looked set to press their advantage.
Battle phases
The Iron Warriors struck first, but the Imperial Fists counterattacked hard. Polux then pulled off a gambit that outmanoeuvred the traitors, and the Imperial Fists gained the upper hand.
Then word came through the storm from Dorn: all Imperial Fists were to return to Terra. Obeying at once, they pulled out and took serious losses doing so.
Several commanders died: Iron Warrior Captain Erasmus Golg, and Imperial Fist Captains Amandus Tyr and Pertinax were all killed in action.
- Iron Warriors: roughly 400 ships, led by Perturabo, Forrix, Berossus, and Golg.
- Imperial Fists: about 363 ships and 20,000 legionaries, led by Alexis Polux.
- Outcome: Imperial strategic withdrawal; two-thirds of the Imperial Fists fleet destroyed.
Why it mattered
The engagement is often called a draw, and that draw is cited as a big reason the Heresy lasted years rather than months. A quick Horus victory never happened.
For the Iron Warriors, it was a bitter moment. They’d been outmanoeuvred by the legion that always seemed to overshadow them, and it weighed on Perturabo.
