The Battle of Ryza was a major Horus Heresy engagement where loyalist Mechanicum and Titan forces defended the forge world Ryza against a massive Traitor invasion. It’s one of the war’s biggest Titan clashes and a turning point for the Loyalist cause in that region.
What was the battle of ryza?
The Battle of Ryza (also called the Defence of Ryza) took place around 013.M31 during the Horus Heresy. Ryza was a loyalist forge world that had purged its traitor faction early in the war, becoming an isolated haven for the Emperor’s forces behind enemy lines.
When Horus pushed into Segmentum Solar, he couldn’t leave Ryza free. He sent a Dark Mechanicum invasion force to take it, leading to a massive confrontation.
Forces and commanders
The loyalists were led by Hierophant Technius Nira Heldentum. Their strength included Legio Crucius, Legio Honorum, Legio Osedax, and Knight Houses Taranis, Zavora, and Vornherr, plus Skitarii and Taghmata.
The traitors were commanded by Fabricator-Locum Yuritus Omnicron. They fielded Legio Magna, Legio Mortis, Legio Vulturum, and Knight Houses Morbidia and Oroborn, along with traitor Taghmata from the Beta-Garmon Cluster.
| Loyalists | Traitors |
|---|---|
| Legio Crucius, Legio Honorum, Legio Osedax | Legio Magna, Legio Mortis, Legio Vulturum |
| House Taranis, House Zavora, House Vornherr | House Morbidia, House Oroborn |
| Hierophant Technius Nira Heldentum | Fabricator-Locum Yuritus Omnicron |
How the battle unfolded
The traitors began with a stealth vanguard. Over a dozen modified Mechanicum cruisers, packed with lobotomized warriors and tainted Skitarii, crept toward Ryza Secundus, the artificial moon. Meanwhile, a 130-ship armada arrived in-system, dwarfing the 20-ship loyalist fleet.
The loyalists missed the infiltration force and were caught off guard when it assaulted Ryza Secundus. Despite heavy anti-aircraft fire, the traitors landed substantial forces on the surface, and the battle became a grinding Titan war across the forge world.
Outcome and aftermath
The battle ended in a pyrrhic loyalist victory. Both sides suffered extremely heavy casualties, but the traitors eventually withdrew.
Ryza remained in loyalist hands, a rare success during the Heresy’s darkest days. The world continued to serve as a vital production centre for the Emperor’s forces.
Why it matters
Ryza was one of the few forge worlds to stay loyal, and its defence tied down significant traitor resources. The battle also showcased the devastating power of Titan Legions in the Heresy.
It’s often confused with Waaagh! Grax, an ork invasion of Ryza in M41. They’re separate events, but both show why Ryza is a prized target.
