The Triumph of Ullanor was the parade that capped the Ullanor Crusade, the campaign where Horus smashed the largest ork empire of the Great Crusade and earned the title Warmaster. It’s remembered as the high point of the Imperium, and the last time the Emperor personally led his armies in the field.
What the Ullanor Crusade actually was
Ullanor was the crown world of Overlord Urlakk Urg, an ork warlord who’d built an empire big enough to threaten the whole sector. The Emperor couldn’t leave that alone, so he sent three Legions plus Imperial Army support to tear it down.
The campaign ran through the closing years of the Great Crusade and ended in 000.M31 with a decisive Imperial win. The orks were wiped out completely, though the Imperium lost at least a thousand warships doing it.
How Horus took the planet
The Ultramarines and White Scars handled the outer worlds while Horus took the Luna Wolves straight at Ullanor itself. He went for the head, not the body: drop pods and heavy shuttles hit Urg’s fortress-palace, and Horus teleported in with a Terminator squad right under the central tower.
He left most of his Terminators to hold the walls and climbed with ten of them. At the top he found Urg with forty of his biggest boyz. Horus cut through them with his lightning claws, beat Urg, dragged him onto the roof and threw him off. With their Overlord dead, the ork empire collapsed.
The Triumph itself
After the fighting, the Imperium held a massive victory parade on Ullanor. It was the last time the Emperor took the field in person, and it’s where he named Horus Warmaster and handed him command of the Great Crusade.
That’s the moment everyone remembers. Horus at his peak, the Emperor stepping back, the Legions cheering. Vulkan later called it the tallest pinnacle before the deepest drop, and he wasn’t wrong.
- Horus named Warmaster in front of the assembled Legions
- The Emperor’s final personal battlefield command
- Widely seen as the high-water mark of the Great Crusade
Why it matters
Ullanor is the hinge the Heresy turns on. The Emperor’s decision to hand Horus overall command, and then withdraw to Terra, left the Warmaster with the loyalty of half the Legions and no supervision. The seeds of the betrayal were planted at the victory party.
It’s also the last clean win the Imperium ever gets. Everything after Ullanor is decline, civil war, and ten thousand years of grinding stalemate.
