The Wars of Faith

The Wars of Faith are religiously inspired conflicts launched by the Imperium at the command of the Adeptus Ministorum. They’re the Ecclesiarchy’s own brand of holy war, distinct from the broader Crusades, and they’ve shaped Imperial history since the 32nd Millennium.

What makes a war of faith different from a crusade

It’s easy to mix them up, but the key difference is who gives the order. A Crusade comes from the High Lords of Terra and pulls in the whole Imperial war machine: Imperial Guard, Navy, Space Marines, and administrators from the Adeptus Terra. A War of Faith is called by the Ecclesiarch alone and mainly involves the Adeptus Ministorum’s own forces, like the Adepta Sororitas and the Frateris Militia.

That said, the two overlap a lot. Both are about conquering territory, purging heretics, and wiping out xenos and mutants. A War of Faith can even be part of a larger Crusade, or get help from the Imperial Guard. When it’s not, the Ecclesiarchy foots the bill entirely.

Who actually controls a war of faith

Even though the Ecclesiarch orders it, he doesn’t have total control. A War of Faith still needs approval from the High Lords of Terra. So it’s a religious conflict with a bureaucratic leash.

Wars of Faith can even be turned inward, against radical or heretical factions within the Ecclesiarchy itself. That’s one of the more interesting wrinkles: the Ministorum isn’t afraid to purge its own.

When they happened

The first War of Faith kicked off in M32 against the Confederation of Light, a rival faction to the Adeptus Ministorum. They hit their peak during the Age of Redemption in M37 to M38, when the Imperium was in a particularly zealous mood.
