The Grey Knights’ Brotherhoods

The Grey Knights don’t fight as one big Chapter. They’re split into eight brotherhoods, each a self-contained force of roughly company size, and each with its own grand master, traditions and specialism. If you want to understand how the daemonhunters actually operate, the brotherhoods are where to start.

What a brotherhood actually is

A brotherhood is the Grey Knights’ equivalent of a company, but it’s more independent than most Space Marine companies. Each one has its own ships, armouries and librarians, and can deploy on its own for years at a time. There are eight in total, and together they make up the roughly thousand-strong Chapter.

Each brotherhood is led by a grand master, and one of those grand masters serves as Supreme Grand Master of the whole Chapter. Kaldor Draigo currently holds that post, though he’s been trapped in the Warp for a long time, so day-to-day leadership often falls to others.

The eight brotherhoods and what makes them different

The brotherhoods aren’t identical. Each has a character and a set of duties, and a few have enough lore to pin down properly.

The 3rd Brotherhood, the Wardmakers, is the one with the most detail. It’s said to be the brotherhood of Janus, the first Supreme Grand Master, and it’s produced heroes like Draigo and Arvann Stern. Its grand master also serves as Warden of the Librarius, which gives him authority over the Chapter’s Librarium Daemonica and its librarians.

  • 1st Brotherhood: often the Supreme Grand Master’s own, and the one most likely to be sent on the Chapter’s most vital missions.
  • 2nd Brotherhood: known for its role in the Months of Shame and its clashes with the Space Wolves.
  • 3rd Brotherhood (Wardmakers): Janus’s legendary brotherhood; its grand master oversees the Librarius.
  • 4th Brotherhood: heavily involved in the wars for the Fenris system and the Terran Crusade.
  • 5th Brotherhood: associated with the purging of the daemonic on Armageddon and elsewhere.
  • 6th Brotherhood: often deployed to the galactic south and the edges of the Maelstrom.
  • 7th Brotherhood: tied to the defence of the Sol system and the Terran Crusade.
  • 8th Brotherhood: known for its aggressive, close-range tactics and its use of interceptors.

How a brotherhood is put together

A brotherhood is built around a core of officers and specialists, then filled out with squads. The 3rd Brotherhood gives us a decent snapshot: four officers (grand master, brother-captain, brotherhood champion, and a brotherhood ancient), then a spread of librarians, and finally the fighting squads.

Why the brotherhoods matter

The brotherhood system lets the Grey Knights spread across the galaxy without ever concentrating their whole strength in one place. It also means each brotherhood builds its own legends and rivalries, which is why you’ll see names like the Wardmakers or the 8th’s interceptors come up again and again.

For the Imperium, that matters because daemonic incursions don’t wait for a Chapter to assemble. A single brotherhood, with its own ships and librarians, can respond fast and quietly. And quiet is the point: most of the Imperium doesn’t even know the Grey Knights exist, and the brotherhoods are designed to keep it that way.
