The Sisters of Silence’s Vigils

The Sisters of Silence’s Vigils are the regional commands of the Silent Sisterhood, the Imperium’s all-blank, anti-psyker militant order. Each Vigil handles the Sisterhood’s work across a set territory, from a single system to an entire sector.

What a vigil actually is

A Vigil is a self-contained group of Sisters of Silence with responsibility for a particular area. It isn’t a single battlefield unit. It’s the administrative and operational body that runs the Sisterhood’s duties across its patch.

Vigils vary wildly in size. Some hold jurisdiction over just a handful of systems with a small number of Sisters. Others have grown to thousands of members and cover entire sectors. Established Vigils can even spawn new Vigils, which is how the Sisterhood has extended its reach since returning to the Imperium.

Heresy-era roots

During the Great Crusade, Vigils were small, highly focused formations put together for one specific task. They weren’t fixed, permanent bodies. When something more lasting was needed, the Sisters mustered from Synods, which acted as a larger pool the Vigils could draw on.

That flexible, mission-first approach is the old model. The modern Vigil is a much more permanent thing.

The post-heresy revival

Roboute Guilliman reestablished the Vigils when he returned in the Era Indomitus. The first of the new ones was the Vigil Indomitus, built from Sisters who answered his call to return to Terra, many of them from lost conclaves the Imperium later rediscovered.

Each Vigil is granted a high level of autonomy and is based in a Spire-Convent, usually a fortified keep at the heart of its territory. Fleet-based Vigils, like those that served with the Indomitus Crusade, instead nominate a capital ship as their Convent. In practice, most Sisters spend little time there, since their duties keep them out in the field.

  • Warriors are split into Cadres, company-level bodies that rarely fight as one.
  • Each Cadre upholds a specific facet of the Vigil’s duties across a stretch of the Imperium.
  • Several Cadres can share the same duty, such as hunting human psykers, investigating Great Tithe non-compliance, or guarding the League of Black Ships.

Known vigils

A number of Vigils are named in Imperial records. Some are tied to a fixed territory, while others are fleet-based and move with the fleets they serve.

Why the vigils matter

The Vigils are how the Silent Sisterhood actually functions as an institution. Without them, the Sisters would be scattered cadres with no chain of command and no territory to protect.

They also let the Sisterhood operate where other Imperial forces can’t. Because the Sisters answer directly to the Emperor rather than the standard Imperial hierarchy, they can deploy on worlds normally exempt from the Imperial Tithe, including Ecclesiarchy and Mechanicus holdings. That makes the Vigils a quiet but important check on psychic threats across the Imperium.
