The Administratum’s Adepts

The Administratum’s adepts are the clerks, scribes and bureaucrats who keep the Imperium running. Billions of them tally tithes, archive records and count populations, and without them the whole machine would seize up.

What the Administratum actually is

The Adeptus Administratum is the administrative arm of the Adeptus Terra, the Imperium’s central governing body. It dates back to M30, when it began as the Imperial Administration under Malcador, and it’s grown into the largest department of the Adeptus Terra by far.

It’s also known as the Scriptists and the Enumerators. The two names get used interchangeably in places, because in practice the Administratum is the Adeptus Terra for most Imperial citizens.

What its adepts do all day

Adepts run censuses, work out tithes, record and file information, and handle the countless other jobs needed to keep a galaxy-spanning empire functioning. The sheer scale is hard to picture: just administering the Imperial Palace is thought to involve over ten billion adepts.

Most work in enormous vaults at logic-engines, and by Imperial standards they count as learned. Many posts are hereditary, with parents handing ranks and duties down to children who carry on the same work their ancestors did.

  • Tithes: calculating what worlds owe in men, material and money
  • Census work: counting populations across the Imperium
  • Archives: recording, storing and retrieving Imperial records
  • Fleet assembly: the logistics behind raising war fleets

Why it matters

The Administratum is often seen as the least prestigious branch of the Imperium, but its senior members are among the most powerful people alive. The Master of the Administratum is the most powerful of the High Lords of Terra. The current holder is Violeta Roskavler.

Its bureaucracy is famously dogmatic. Entire departments have been lost or forgotten, and some still carry out long-obsolete duties because nobody told them to stop. The inefficiency is staggering, yet the Imperium would grind to a halt without it.

How adepts look and where they sit

Like other non-combatant servants of the Adeptus Terra, adepts wear monastic-style dress. The lowest scribes wear black, and rank is shown by progressively lighter shades of grey, up to pure white at the top.

The Administratum also commands real force when it needs to: the Imperial Guard, the Militarum Tempestus, the Imperial Navy and the Literati all fall under its armed forces.
