The Black Ships’ Psykers

The Black Ships’ psykers are the countless human psykers rounded up across the Imperium and shipped to Terra. It’s a grim harvest that keeps the Astronomican burning and the Emperor alive, and it’s one of the most feared duties in the galaxy.

What the Black Ships actually do

The League of Black Ships is the recruiting arm of the Adeptus Astra Telepathica, the Imperium’s psychic bureaucracy. Its fleet does one job: find psykers, take them, and bring them to Terra.

These aren’t ordinary transports. They’re warded against the warp, built from psychically resistant black metal, and crewed by people who know exactly what they’re carrying. The holds are psi-shielded, and the cargo is human.

Every world gets a visit roughly once a century. When a Black Ship arrives, the planetary governor is told to prepare the tithe, a levy of psykers. Refuse, and you’ve got bigger problems than a ship in orbit.

Why the tithe exists

The Emperor is a corpse on a throne, and the Astronomican, the psychic beacon that makes warp travel possible, eats psykers by the thousand. The Black Ships feed that appetite. Without them, the Imperium’s navigation collapses.

There’s a darker edge. Psykers are dangerous. Untrained ones attract daemons, go mad, or worse. The Black Ships are as much a cull as a collection service. Many never make it to Terra, and those who do are tested. The ones found wanting don’t get a second chance.

Since the Great Rift tore the galaxy open, it’s gotten worse. Psyker births are up, warp routes are blocked, and worlds are piling up with rogue psykers nobody can reach. The Black Fleet is stretched thin.

The crew and the wards

The Sisters of Silence are the backbone of the operation. Blanks, immune to psychic powers, they can walk into a hold full of terrified psykers without flinching. They handle the prisoners, and they handle the ones who resist.

The ships themselves are covered in hexagrammic and pentagrammic wards. Every surface is designed to contain, not comfort. The quote attributed to a Black Ship captain says it plainly: souls too dangerous to live, carried to the Emperor’s table.

Where the psykers end up

Most are fed into the Astronomican. A rare few, strong enough and stable enough, get recruited instead. They might join the Scholastia Psykana, the other half of the Adeptus Astra Telepathica, and become sanctioned psykers. Some serve in the Astra Militarum, the Inquisition, or the Adeptus Astartes.

But that’s the exception. For the vast majority, the Black Ship is a one-way trip. The Imperium doesn’t waste psykers. It uses them, one way or another.

Key facts

  • The Black Ships collect psykers from across the Imperium and deliver them to Terra.
  • The fleet is the recruiting division of the Adeptus Astra Telepathica, not the Inquisition.
  • Ships are warded with hexagrammic and pentagrammic protections and built from psychically resistant metal.
  • The Sisters of Silence crew the ships and handle the prisoners.
  • Most collected psykers are fed to the Astronomican; a few are recruited instead.
  • Since the Great Rift, more psykers are born and fewer can be reached, straining the fleet.

FAQ

What happens to psykers on the Black Ships?

They’re held in psi-shielded cells and taken to Terra. Most are sacrificed to fuel the Astronomican. A small number are instead recruited into the Scholastia Psykana or other Imperial organisations.

Who runs the Black Ships?

The League of Black Ships, a division of the Adeptus Astra Telepathica. The fleet is commanded by the Mistress of the Black Fleet, with the Sisters of Silence providing the crew that handles the psykers.

How often does a Black Ship visit a planet?

Roughly once every hundred years per world. The governor is required to prepare a tithe of psykers for collection.

Are the Black Ships the same as the Inquisition’s Black Ships?

No. The Inquisition has its own vessels sometimes called Black Ships, but they’re a separate thing entirely. The League of Black Ships belongs to the Adeptus Astra Telepathica.
