The Temple of the Culexus is one of the assassin temples of the Officio Assassinorum, and its operatives exist for one job: killing psykers. They’re the rarest Imperial assassins, and arguably the most feared, because they don’t just hunt you. They make you feel wrong.
What the temple actually is
The Culexus Temple is a branch of the Officio Assassinorum, the Imperium’s official assassin organisation. Each temple trains a different kind of killer, and the Culexus have the narrowest brief of all: psykers are their exclusive targets.
Their home base is a secret. According to Imperial records, it sits on a planet that orbits no sun and lies beyond the reach of the Astronomican, which is about as hidden as a place can get in the 41st millennium.
Pariahs: why the Culexus feel so wrong
Culexus Assassins carry the Pariah Gene. They’re null-entities in the warp, which is a polite way of saying they have no presence in it at all. To normal people that reads as deep unease, and some cultures have turned that feeling into folklore about skull-faced killers who walk through walls.
To a psyker, standing near one is panic. To a daemon, a Culexus is simply invisible. The assassin uses that confusion to close the distance and finish the job.
The gene is staggeringly rare, showing up in maybe one person in a billion or more. Between that and the losses taken during training, the Culexus are the rarest assassins the Imperium has.
- Recruits are either found and taken by the temple, or vat-grown.
- Many grow up parentless, and the Pariah effect leaves them struggling with normal social contact.
- They can imitate human behaviour well enough to run an undercover mission, but they may not actually feel anything.
How a Culexus kills
The signature weapon is the Animus Speculum, an ancient device that channels a lethal psychic blast. Nobody’s fully sure how it works, but the going theory is that it captures warp energy stripped from nearby targets by the assassin’s null aura, then fires it back out.
Whatever the mechanism, it scales with the opposition. The more psykers nearby, the stronger the Speculum becomes, since it drains their power to feed its own.
- Etherium: projects massive distortion and confusion into everyone nearby, psychic or not.
- That confusion, stacked on the unease a Pariah already causes, makes a Culexus almost impossible to target.
The Eldar who almost destroyed it
The Eldar fear the Culexus more than most, and for good reason. Their leaders are usually psychic.
Farseer Alladrios Kulcassian of Craftworld Alaitoc spent centuries trying to find and destroy the temple. He eventually tracked it down and sent the Shadow-class cruiser Legacy of Eldanesh to finish the job. Then his precognition showed him the outcome: wiping out the temple would lead to Alaitoc’s own annihilation. He recalled the ship, and the temple survived.

FAQ
What is the Temple of the Culexus?
It’s one of the temples of the Officio Assassinorum, the Imperium’s assassin organisation. Its operatives, Culexus Assassins, are trained specifically to hunt and kill psykers.
Why are Culexus Assassins so rare?
They need the Pariah Gene, which appears in roughly one person in a billion or fewer. Training losses push the numbers down even further, making them the rarest Imperial assassins.
What is an Animus Speculum?
It’s the Culexus Assassin’s main weapon, an ancient device that fires a psychic blast. It seems to store warp energy pulled from nearby targets by the assassin’s null aura, and it gets stronger the more psykers are around.
Where is the Culexus Temple located?
That’s a closely guarded secret. Records say it’s on a planet orbiting no sun, beyond the reach of the Astronomican.
