The Thousand Sons Rubricae are the silent, dust-filled suits of power armour that make up most of the Legion’s ranks. They exist because of one catastrophic spell, and they’ve shaped the Thousand Sons ever since.
What the Rubricae are
Rubricae (also called Rubric Marines) are the armoured shells of Thousand Sons Marines who had no psychic gift. Their bodies were turned to ash and their spirits sealed inside their armour, leaving them as obedient, fearless automatons.
They can’t act alone. Without a sorcerer nearby to give orders, they tend to just stand there, inert. A single Aspiring Sorcerer can command a whole squad, and he’ll enchant their bolters so the rounds become Inferno Bolts that burn souls and ignore ordinary armour.
Why the Rubric happened
After the Thousand Sons fled into the Eye of Terror, mutation ran wild through the Legion. To stop it, Ahriman cast a mighty spell called the Rubric of Ahriman.
It didn’t work the way he hoped. Every Marine without psychic ability was reduced to ash, their souls trapped in their armour. The survivors, the sorcerers, were left with an army of dust-filled shells.
Dust, death, and rebirth
When a Rubric Marine is destroyed, its dried remains spill out and scatter. Only a powerful sorcerer can gather the dust, reseal the armour, and perform the dangerous ritual that brings it back. One mispronounced syllable can kill the caster or drive him mad.
Some warbands even create new Rubricae from Thousand Sons who fell long ago, conquering a world just to reach an old battlefield. The Ynnari have also shown they can fully restore a Rubricae’s soul, memories and all, which they’ve used to unsettle Ahriman.
On the tabletop and in the lore
In games of Warhammer 40,000, Rubric Marines are the Thousand Sons’ basic Battleline unit. They’re led by an Aspiring Sorcerer and typically carry Inferno Bolters, Warpflamers, or a Soulreaper Cannon.
They’re not mindless in every sense: they’re perfect bodyguards and enforcers, and they follow orders without fear or ambition. That’s exactly why the sorcerers rely on them.
