Chogoris

Chogoris is the birthworld of Primarch Jaghatai Khan and the homeworld of the White Scars Space Marine Chapter. Imperial records also call it Mundus Planus, and it’s a feudal world of open steppe and tribal horse-warriors out in the Ultima Segmentum.

What and where Chogoris is

Chogoris sits in the Yasan Sector of the Ultima Segmentum, inside the Chogoris System. It’s classified as both an Adeptus Astartes homeworld and a Feudal World, with a tithe grade of Solutio Prima.

Its population is tiny by Imperial standards, around ten million in the 41st millennium, though records put it at roughly 1.8 billion during the Horus Heresy era. The drop tells you a lot about how hard the world’s recent history has been.

  • Name: Chogoris (Mundus Planus in Imperial records)
  • Segmentum: Ultima, Yasan Sector
  • Class: Adeptus Astartes homeworld, Feudal World
  • Tithe grade: Solutio Prima
  • Population: about 10 million (M41)

History before the Imperium

By the end of the Age of Strife, Chogoris’ people had fallen back to blackpowder-level technology. A powerful empire ruled the planet from the city of Quan Zhou, headed by a ruler called the Palatine.

When Jaghatai Khan arrived, he united the western desert tribes into one horde and overthrew the Palatine. After he left with the Emperor, he put Ogedei in charge, but Ogedei couldn’t hold the tribes together. They broke apart and went back to their old cycle of inter-tribal war, which may have suited the Khan fine, since it kept the warrior culture that feeds White Scars recruitment alive.

Recent troubles

In 890.M41 a Necron Tombship entered orbit and bombarded an empty stretch of the surface for reasons nobody’s explained. The White Scars battle barge Jaghatai’s Pride broke through its shields while Quan Zhou’s defence laser destroyed the ship in a single shot.

A later transmission in M41 recorded Chogoris as fully infested by a subterranean alien species called the Drugh. In 999.M41, Huron Blackheart’s Red Corsairs besieged the system, pulling the White Scars away from Armageddon and the Agrellan campaign.

The worst came in M42 with the War for Chogoris. After Cadia fell, the growing Maelstrom began warping the planet itself. Grasslands burn with Warp energy, wildlife turns monstrous, and the Red Corsairs have been building ziggurats out of Chogoris’ dead. The Chapter doesn’t know what those mountains of flesh are for, but they’re sure it’s a Chaos ritual nearing completion. Guilliman’s Indomitus Crusade eventually brought relief.

  • 890.M41: Necron Tombship destroyed over Quan Zhou
  • M41: recorded Drugh infestation
  • 999.M41: Red Corsair siege under Huron Blackheart
  • M42: the War for Chogoris, ended with Indomitus Crusade aid

Culture and geography

Chogoris is mostly open grassland and steppe, dotted with tribes that live much like the Khan’s original horde did. Quan Zhou remains its great city, and its defence laser is still the planet’s headline piece of hardware.

The tribes are the point of the world. They supply the White Scars with recruits raised in a warrior culture, which is why the Chapter has never tried too hard to unify them. A Chogorian proverb from before Compliance sums up the mood: all emperors are liars, all tyrants are thieves.
