Vigilus Tertius is a hive world in the Nachmund Gauntlet, the one reliable path through the Great Rift. That location makes it one of the most fought-over planets in the Imperium Nihilus, and it’s been invaded by Orks, Genestealers, Drukhari, Aeldari, and Chaos since the Rift opened.
What vigilus tertius is
Vigilus Tertius is a hive world and war world in the Segmentum Obscurus, sitting inside the Nachmund subsector. It’s part of the Vigilus System and has a population of roughly 167 billion. Its tithe grade is Solutio Extremis, which tells you the Imperium expects everything it can give.
Before the Great Rift tore the galaxy in two, Vigilus was a major producer of manpower and war material. Its hive cities and colossal forges churned out troops and weapons, and its Tech-Priests controlled an STC that made bastion-class force fields. Those shields became the planet’s signature export and a cornerstone of its defense.
- Segmentum: Obscurus
- Subsector: Nachmund
- Class: Hive World / War World / Sentinel World
- Population: ~167,000,000,000
- Tithe: Solutio Extremis
Why it matters: the Nachmund Gauntlet
When the Cicatrix Maledictum split the Imperium, Vigilus ended up inside the Imperium Nihilus. It also sits on the Nachmund Gauntlet, the thin corridor of safe space that connects the two halves of the Imperium. That makes it one of the only stable routes across the Rift.
Because of that, Vigilus became a sanctuary for refugees trying to cross the Gauntlet. Its hive sprawls are packed with people, and each sprawl is protected by psychically charged Bastion-class force fields that knock intruders comatose, letting defenders cut them down. The planet also became a stronghold for the Forge World Stygies VIII because of its proximity to the Stygius Front.
The wars for vigilus
Vigilus has been invaded by nearly everyone. Days after the Rift opened, an Ork fleet crashed into its plains and unleashed a Speedwaaagh! on the hive sprawls. The Genestealer Cult known as the Pauper Princes, which had been embedded in the nobility for two centuries, rose up and sabotaged defenses. That opened the door for Drukhari raiders, Gellerpox daemons, and Death Guard.
The fighting drew in Marneus Calgar, who played the invaders against each other and then duelled Abaddon the Despoiler at Saint’s Haven. Calgar was cut down by the daemon blade Drach’nyen, but his stand bought time for an Aeldari vessel to cripple Abaddon’s flagship, the Vengeful Spirit. The Warmaster withdrew, and Calgar’s Victrix Honour Guard pulled his broken body from the field.
- Orks: Speedwaaagh! invasion right after the Rift opened
- Genestealer Cults: the Pauper Princes, active for two centuries
- Drukhari, Gellerpox, and Death Guard: exploited the sabotage
- Chaos: Abaddon’s forces used Noctilith Crowns to flood Vigilus with warp energy
- Aeldari: crippled the Vengeful Spirit, forcing Abaddon to retreat
Who rules and who fights
For millennia, Vigilus was ruled by the Agamemnus Dynasty, starting with Governor Lucienne Agamemnus IX. The dynasty had a treaty with the Mechanicum, but the Ecclesiarchy kept chipping away at its power. The Ministorum gained influence over the PDF (the Vigilant Guard and Vigilant Creedsmen) and brought in Adepta Sororitas enforcers.
Open war between the dynasty, the Mechanicum, and the Ecclesiarchy was avoided by the Aquiliarian Council, a combined body that kept the peace. That balance is fragile, and with the planet still under threat, it’s anyone’s guess how long it holds.
