The N’dras Sept

N’dras is a T’au sept world in the Second Sphere of Expansion that the T’au themselves walked away from. Nobody outside the Ethereals knows why, and that silence is exactly what makes it interesting.

What the N’dras sept actually is

N’dras sits on the Eastern Fringe and was settled during the T’au Empire’s Second Sphere of Expansion. It’s a sept world, so it should follow the usual pattern: a home for a T’au population, a Fire Caste garrison, and a place in the wider empire’s structure.

It doesn’t. The Ethereals ordered the world voluntarily abandoned, and the T’au who stayed behind are treated with suspicion by the rest of the empire. Sources describe them as quick-tempered and brooding, which reads less like a personality quirk and more like a reputation the rest of the T’au have pinned on them.

Why it matters: secrets, ghosts, and the Ethereals

N’dras has a reputation for being strange. Earth Caste teams keep picking up readings from the world they can’t explain, and the scientists still working there do so under heavy Fire Caste guard. Their actual purpose is kept secret, even by T’au standards.

Then there’s the Ghosts of N’dras. During the Third Sphere of Expansion, Ethereal Aun’Va gave this covert unit its orders: go after the Imperium quietly. They did well. They’re credited with detonating the Worldcore on Lamdiah and assassinating Cardinal Ambros the Blessed.

  • Abandoned on Ethereal orders, for reasons never made public
  • Remaining T’au are seen as untrustworthy, hot-headed, and withdrawn
  • Earth Caste reports unexplained readings from the world
  • The Ghosts of N’dras ran covert operations against the Imperium in the Third Sphere

Colours and markings

N’dras sept markings are black. Armour is blue, and the palette shifts depending on where a cadre is fighting: blue camouflage with black cloth on the ocean world Kvariam Alpha, sea-green on N’dras’s third moon, and olive green elsewhere.

How it fits into wider T’au lore

N’dras belongs to the group of lesser septs alongside worlds like Au’taal, D’yanoi, and Fi’rios, rather than the major septs such as T’au, Bork’an, or Vior’la. That’s partly a matter of scale, and partly because an abandoned world doesn’t fit neatly into the empire’s story about itself.

It’s also one of the clearest examples of the Ethereals keeping their own people in the dark. The T’au are told the Greater Good explains everything, and then there’s a whole planet they’re not supposed to ask about.
