The Doomsday Ark

The Doomsday Ark is a Necron grav-tank that exists for one reason: to point a doomsday cannon at something and erase it. It trades the troop bay of a Ghost Ark for the single most destructive gun in the Necron armoury, and it’s been doing that job since the days of the Necrontyr.

What the doomsday ark actually is

Strip away the hull and you’re left with a self-propelled cannon. That’s not a knock on it, it’s the design brief. The Doomsday Ark shares its silhouette with the Ghost Ark transport, but where the Ghost Ark carries warriors, this one carries a doomsday cannon and the power systems to feed it.

The design goes back to the Necrontyr, which makes it older than most species’ entire recorded history. It looks fragile. It isn’t. Energy shielding keeps it in the fight long enough to fire, and that’s usually all the time it needs.

Why the doomsday cannon matters

Even at low power the cannon is brutally destructive. At full charge it leaves conventional plasma weapons far behind, and the sources are blunt about what that means: only a Titan can realistically expect to survive a direct hit.

Its range is the other half of the problem. Doomsday Arks typically kill their targets before those targets can close to their own weapon range, so the usual counter, getting in close, doesn’t work. Flanking doesn’t help much either. The Ark is far more agile than it looks and can swing round to face a new threat.

  • Low power shots are already lethal against most targets
  • Full power output is described as Titan-killing
  • Long range means it usually fires first
  • Deceptively mobile, so flanking attacks tend to fail

How it’s used in battle

On the offensive it works as mobile artillery or a tank-hunter. On the defensive it’s just as comfortable, and that’s where things get interesting: a stationary Doomsday Ark can pull more of its power reserves into the cannon, hitting harder than one on the move.

The Nihilakh Dynasty lean into this hard. They keep their Arks parked unless there’s genuinely no alternative, treating them as fixed guns that happen to have engines.

Where it sits in the Necron roster

The Doomsday Ark belongs to the Necrons’ grav-vehicle line, alongside the Annihilation Barge, Catacomb Command Barge, Ghost Ark and Tesseract Ark. It’s the dedicated heavy-hitter of that group.

If you want the same gun on legs rather than a hull, the Canoptek Doomstalker is the close relative worth knowing about. Same idea, different delivery.

  • Design dates back to the Necrontyr
  • Protected by energy shielding despite its fragile look
  • Full-power shots are described as only survivable by a Titan
  • Firing while stationary increases its destructive output
  • Shares its hull design with the Ghost Ark transport

FAQ

Is the Doomsday Ark a tank?

Not in the conventional sense. It’s better described as a self-propelled doomsday cannon with a hull and shields wrapped around it.

How is it different from a Ghost Ark?

They share a chassis design, but the Ghost Ark carries Necron warriors while the Doomsday Ark swaps that capacity for a single doomsday cannon.

Which dynasty favours stationary Doomsday Arks?

The Nihilakh Dynasty, who leave theirs parked to draw extra power into the cannon unless they have no other option.
