The Ruinstorm Region

The Ruinstorm region was a massive warp storm that tore the galaxy apart during the Horus Heresy. It cut off the loyalist legions from Terra and gave the traitors a huge advantage.

What was the Ruinstorm?

The Ruinstorm was a warp storm that appeared in the early 31st millennium, around 007-011.M31. It was created by Lorgar, the primarch of the Word Bearers, as part of his plan to isolate the loyalist forces from Terra.

It was unleashed by Erebus during the Battle of Calth. Then Lorgar made it bigger and more powerful through the bloodshed and misery he caused in the Shadow Crusade. The storm made the warp impossible to navigate for loyalists, but traitors could still get through using secret paths that Lorgar knew.

Why did it matter?

The Ruinstorm was a disaster for the loyalists. It cut off the Blood Angels Legion, leaving most of them stranded in the Signus Cluster and unable to talk to Baal. It also isolated other loyalist forces, making it seem like Terra might have already fallen.

The situation got so bad that Roboute Guilliman, primarch of the Ultramarines, thought Terra was lost. He set up a backup empire called Imperium Secundus as a safety measure. The only way loyalists could sail through the storm was by using the Pharos, a xenos device that let them regroup at Macragge.

How did it end?

The Ruinstorm started to weaken after the Second Battle of Davin. It got to the point where Rogal Dorn believed Guilliman could eventually reach Terra. The storm didn’t disappear all at once, but it became less of a barrier.

The novel Ruinstorm by David Annandale covers the attempt by Sanguinius, Guilliman, and Lion El’Jonson to cross the storm and reach Terra. It’s book 46 in the Horus Heresy series.
