The Vior’la Sept

The Vior’la Sept is one of the T’au Empire’s major fire caste worlds, a first phase colony orbiting a binary star where extreme heat and plasma storms have bred some of the most aggressive warriors in the empire. If you’ve seen white-armoured T’au with red markings charging headlong into battle, that’s Vior’la.

What the Vior’la Sept actually is

Vior’la sits in the Eastern Fringe and orbits two stars. Once a year the planet passes through the gap between them, and the resulting plasma storms scour the surface in an event the T’au call the Trial by Fire. The name translates roughly as “hot blooded”, which tells you most of what you need to know about the culture.

It’s a first phase colony, so it was settled early in the empire’s expansion, and it’s counted among the major septs. Its neighbours include Sa’cea, Tau’n and Arthas Moloch.

Why Vior’la matters

The most respected fire caste academies in the empire are here, including Va’shea, Fo’ur’as and Ko’vrett around Vior’la Prime. Graduates are known for military prowess, high-speed warfare and a preference for the Mont’ka approach: strike hard, strike fast, don’t give the enemy time to breathe.

Even when Vior’la commanders use Kauyon, the patient baiting tactic, they do it with their own trademark aggression, drawing enemies in until they’re desperate for help and then springing the ambush.

Vior’la’s earth caste scientists developed short-ranged, high-impact weapons such as the pulse carbine and pulse blaster, plus the onager gauntlet. Its water caste have a matching reputation as hard bargainers and risk-takers.

  • Sept markings: bright red. Armour colour: white.
  • Home to the empire’s most respected fire caste academies.
  • Warriors favour Mont’ka and aggressive, fast-moving warfare.
  • Source of the pulse carbine, pulse blaster and onager gauntlet.

The Trial by Fire and the Ork invasion

In 600.M40, around the time of the Trial by Fire, Vior’la was hit by a massive Ork fleet under Warboss Garskrak. The inhabitants sealed their cities behind protective domes, and Pathfinders lured the Ork hordes into the deadly plasma storms, where the radiation finished them off.

It’s a neat illustration of what Vior’la does best: use the planet’s own hostility as a weapon.

The World Eaters attack

At some point Vior’la was invaded again, this time by World Eaters Chaos Space Marines backed by Khorne Berzerkers and Chaos Spawn. T’au firepower and discipline held them off at range until Khorne’s rage started spreading through the T’au ranks themselves.

The T’au abandoned long-range tactics and charged into melee, which went badly. Millions died before a council of six Ethereals arrived to calm the fire warriors, restore order and allow a withdrawal to orbit. Sources don’t give a firm date for this battle.
