The War of Beasts

The War of Beasts is the long, messy fight for the Imperial world of Vigilus, a war that pulled in the Imperium, Chaos, Orks, Genestealers and Eldar all at once. It matters because it’s one of the biggest flashpoints in the current 40k timeline, and it’s still shaping the Nachmund region today.

What the War of Beasts actually is

It’s the catch-all name for the ongoing conflict on Vigilus, an Imperial world that sits on a vital route through the Nachmund Gauntlet. The fighting kicked off in 001.M42 and has ground on for decades, with the Imperium just about holding on.

Later phases picked up the nickname the War of Nightmares once Chaos properly joined the party. Same war, darker turn.

  • Location: Vigilus, a key world in the Nachmund Gauntlet
  • Dates: 001.M42 onwards (roughly 1.192.VCM to 25.141.VCM on the Vigilus calendar)
  • Status: Ongoing, though the worst of the fighting is winding down
  • Result so far: Imperium still holds the planet, but the wider Nachmund Rift War has erupted

Who’s fighting and why

It started as an Ork problem. A Speedwaaagh! led by Krooldakka hit Vigilus hard, and the Genestealer cults already buried in the hives rose up at the same time. Then the Eldar of Saim-Hann arrived, the Dark Eldar crashed the party, and finally Abaddon’s Chaos forces turned up to make everything worse.

The Imperium’s defenders are a who’s who of Imperial heroes: Marneus Calgar, Saint Celestine, Chapter Master Kantor, Iron Father Stronos, and a pile of Guard, Mechanicus and Sororitas commanders. Calgar was wounded in the fighting, and Governor Lucienne Agamemnus IX is missing.

How the war unfolded

It came in waves. Phase one was the Ork Speedwaaagh! and the Genestealer uprising, including the Battle of Megaborealis and the fight for Oteck Hivesprawl. Phase two brought Saim-Hann, Dark Eldar raids and the Dontoria Firewall. Phase three saw Chaos arrive properly, turning the war into the War of Nightmares.

The fighting has been brutal: at least several billion military and civilian dead, with heavy losses on every side. The Imperium’s grip held, but only just.

Why it matters in the wider setting

Vigilus is the gateway to the Nachmund Gauntlet, one of the few stable routes through the Great Rift. If it falls, Chaos gets a highway into the Imperium Nihilus. That’s why the war drew so many big names and why it’s still a live front in the current lore.

It’s also a good example of how modern 40k wars work: not one clean enemy, but a pile-up of Orks, cults, Eldar and Chaos all fighting over the same rock.

FAQ

Is the War of Beasts the same as the War of the Beast?

No, they’re different wars with confusingly similar names. The War of Beasts is the fight on Vigilus in M42. The War of the Beast is the massive Ork Waaagh! led by the Beast in M32, which nearly broke the Imperium.

Who won the War of Beasts?

Nobody yet, really. The Imperium still holds Vigilus, but the conflict is ongoing and the wider Nachmund Rift War has kicked off. It’s a stalemate with a lot of dead on all sides.

Why did the Eldar switch sides?

The Eldar of Saim-Hann started out fighting the Imperium, but from phase three onwards they allied with them against Chaos. The arrival of Abaddon’s forces made the bigger threat obvious.
