The Adeptus Custodes’ Creation

The Adeptus Custodes are the Emperor’s own bodyguards, created before the Space Marines and above them in every way. Their origin is deliberately obscure, but what’s known makes them the most elite warriors in the Imperium.

Who created them, and when

The Emperor made the Custodes himself, using genetomantic lore he’d gathered over centuries. They first appeared during the Terran Unification Wars, before the Great Crusade, as his personal guard within the Imperial Household.

The earliest recruits came from the children of Terran nobility. Some of these were later grouped into Squad Dynastes, known as the Lords of Terra. Their first leader was Constantin Valdor, who vanished from records after the Horus Heresy.

How they differ from Space Marines

If Space Marines are the sons of the Primarchs, the Custodians are the Emperor’s own progeny, at least in every way that matters. They’re individually crafted, not mass-produced, and each one is a hand-made work of gene-artifice.

That difference shows in their status. Custodians outrank Space Marines and even Inquisitors, who must kneel before them. They decide who may enter the Emperor’s throne room, and when.

  • Created before the Space Marines, during the Unification Wars.
  • Each Custodian is individually designed, not batch-produced.
  • They answer only to the Emperor and guard the Imperial Palace.
  • Their authority exceeds that of Space Marines and Inquisitors.

What the records actually say

Almost nothing about their creation is public. The truth is hidden in cave etchings, hieroglyphics, stasis-locked parchment, and gene-sealed tomes no living person can open. Even the Custodes themselves rarely speak of it.

Outside sources describe them as golden demigods or gilded dragons of Terran myth, but that’s folklore, not fact. The line between myth and history is impossible to draw.

Their role in the Horus Heresy

The Custodes fought in the Horus Heresy, but details are even sparser than usual for that era. They stayed loyal to the Emperor, and after the Heresy they largely withdrew to Terra.

For much of their history they rarely left the Imperial Palace, and even more rarely left Terra. That changed in the Era Indomitus, when they began to deploy more widely.
