The Celestial Lions are a Space Marine chapter created from Imperial Fists gene-seed in the 38th millennium. They’re best known for publicly condemning the Inquisition after a controversial Exterminatus, a decision that turned a proud chapter into a hunted one.
Who they are
Founded in M38 from Imperial Fists stock, the Celestial Lions built a long and respectable record before their run-in with the Inquisition. They wear gold armour with blue pauldrons and helmets, a scheme that makes them easy to spot on the tabletop.
Their homeworld was Elysium IX, which has since been destroyed. The chapter itself is badly depleted, with fewer than 96 battle-brothers remaining according to Imperial records. Their current Chapter Master is unknown, though Ekene Dubaku held the role previously.
The Khattarn Insurrection and the feud with the Inquisition
During the Khattarn Insurrection, five companies of Celestial Lions fought alongside Inquisitor Apollyon to put down a rebellion on Khattar. The campaign went well: the rebels were crushed in three months and the Marines withdrew.
Then the Imperial Navy, acting on Apollyon’s orders, bombarded Khattar from orbit and killed the entire population. The Celestial Lions were furious. Captain Saul tried to stop the bombardment but couldn’t override an Inquisitor’s authority.
The chapter responded by publicly condemning the Inquisition, which is roughly as wise as insulting your own commissar. A delegation of senior officers sent to Terra to press their case never arrived, their ship lost to a warp storm and found wrecked two years later in Ork territory. The Lions kept pushing for an investigation anyway.
Armageddon and the Great Rift
The chapter later fought in the Third War for Armageddon, and the experience nearly finished them. They took heavy losses against Ork forces, and many fans believe the Inquisition quietly encouraged the attrition. Whether that’s true or just paranoia is left deliberately ambiguous in the lore.
The Great Rift’s opening made things worse. Cut off and reduced to a shadow of their former strength, the Celestial Lions survived largely thanks to the intervention of the Black Templars and the crew of the Spear of the Emperor.
Culture and organisation
The Celestial Lions belong to the Adeptus Vaelarii, a trio of chapters tasked with guarding the Elara’s Veil region alongside the Emperor’s Spears and the Star Scorpions. That duty gives them a distinct identity separate from the bulk of Imperial Fists successors.
Like most chapters, they follow the Codex Astartes structure with a Chapter Master at the top. Their heraldry features a lion motif, fitting for a chapter whose name and gold-and-blue colours evoke nobility and pride.
