The Kasr’s Ruins

The Kasr’s Ruins are what’s left of Cadia’s fortress cities after the planet broke. Each Kasr was a militarised city built to be a death trap for invaders, and they were the backbone of Cadian defences for ten thousand years.

What a Kasr actually was

A Kasr was a fortress city on Cadia, not a normal settlement. Each one had a resident garrison running into the hundreds of thousands, and the whole place was designed around the idea that attackers would eventually reach the walls.

The outer defences came first: rings of massive earthworks packed with gun emplacements and weapons batteries, then an inner moat crossed only by hydraulic bascule bridges. Every bridge had a heavily armed barbican watching it, and armoured fortifications and shatrovies covered the approach. Get past all that and you’d find streets laid out in geometric patterns that look like puzzles or the teeth of a key.

Why the cities were built that way

Cadia’s earliest Kasrs copied the High Terra style, all wide streets on a neat grid. That turned out to be a disaster. In early M32 a Chaos invasion walked through three of the old Kasrs with barely a fight.

After that, Imperial architects stopped caring about comfort or fashion. New Kasrs were laid out as death zones, full of tunnels, switchback roads, blockhouse ground floors and overhanging buildings. Marketplaces, public auditoriums, bakeries and even living rooms doubled as pillboxes, gun emplacements, ammo dumps and bunkers. Anything short of the heaviest bombardment would just bounce off.

The payoff was time. Cadians are masters of urban warfare, and this layout let them hold a single Kasr for months or even years after the outer defences fell.

Kasrkin and the wider Kasr network

Kasrkin are the Storm Trooper units trained specifically to defend Kasrs, which is where the name comes from. They’re the elite of the Cadian Shock Troopers.

The word didn’t only apply to cities. Some of Cadia’s sister Fortress Worlds were referred to as Kasrs too, including Kasr Holn, Kasr Partox and Kasr Sonnen. Plenty of individual Kasrs are named in the lore, such as Kasr Kraf, Kasr Tyrok (site of the Battle of Tyrok Fields) and Kasr Myrak, Kasr Rantik and Kasr Soliq, all besieged during the 13th Black Crusade.

  • Kasr Batrok, Kasr Bellan, Kasr Derm, Kasr Derth, Kasr Feros
  • Kasr Gehr, Kasr Gesh, Kasr Geth, Kasr Haark, Kasr Halig
  • Kasr Helg, Kasr Kharkovan, Kasr Kraf, Kasr Myrak, Kasr Rantik
  • Kasr Relon, Kasr Soliq, Kasr Trunch, Kasr Tyrok, Kasr Vark
  • Kasr Viklas, Kasr Wynich

What happened to them

The Kasrs were the front line of the 13th Black Crusade. Several were besieged, and when Cadia itself was destroyed the surviving Kasrs became ruins, either shattered on the broken planet or left as abandoned fortifications.

The Cadian legacy carried on through the Kasrkin and the regiments that escaped, but the Kasr’s Ruins are a reminder of what was lost: ten thousand years of fortress-building, gone in a single campaign.

Key facts

  • Kasrs were militarised fortress cities on Cadia, each with a garrison of hundreds of thousands.
  • Defences included earthworks, gun emplacements, a moat, bascule bridges and barbicans.
  • Early grid-pattern Kasrs failed in early M32, so later ones were built as urban death traps.
  • Kasrkin are Storm Troopers trained specifically to defend Kasrs.
  • Some sister Fortress Worlds, like Kasr Holn and Kasr Partox, were also called Kasrs.
  • Kasr Tyrok was the site of the Battle of Tyrok Fields; Kasr Myrak, Kasr Rantik and Kasr Soliq were besieged in the 13th Black Crusade.

FAQ

What does Kasr mean in Warhammer 40k?

Kasr is the Cadian word for a fortress city. Each one was a militarised settlement with a huge garrison, built so that every street, building and market square could be turned into a defensive position.

What are the Kasr’s Ruins?

They’re the remains of Cadia’s fortress cities after the planet was destroyed during the 13th Black Crusade. Some were besieged and wrecked before Cadia broke, and the rest were left as ruins or debris.

Who defends a Kasr?

The resident Cadian garrison does the bulk of the fighting, with Kasrkin storm troopers trained specifically for Kasr defence. The city’s design lets a relatively small force hold out for a very long time.
