Thirteenth Black Crusade

The Thirteenth Black Crusade was Abaddon the Despoiler’s largest and most devastating assault on the Imperium, launched in 999.M41. It broke the Cadian Gate, destroyed Cadia, and opened a warp rift across the galaxy.

History

Abaddon launched the Thirteenth Black Crusade in 999.M41, the thirteenth of his great campaigns against the Imperium. It triggered the biggest mobilisation of Imperial and Chaos forces since the Horus Heresy, drawing in the Eldar and even the Necrons as events spiralled beyond anyone’s control.

The Despoiler’s plan was called the Crimson Path. He meant to flood Cadia with daemons and overload the pylons that kept the Warp in check there. If that worked, the Eye of Terror would swallow the planet and turn it into a daemon world. From there Abaddon could jump from system to system, widening the rift until it reached Terra itself.

The crusade opened with betrayal on Cadia, where Chaos agents and cultists undermined the planet’s defences before the main fleets arrived. Abaddon’s forces also struck at Medusa, home of the Iron Hands, to tie down loyalist reinforcements and spread the war across Segmentum Obscurus.

The battle for the Cadian Gate became the heart of the campaign. Lord Castellan Ursarkar E. Creed led the defence, joined by Saint Celestine, Archmagos Belisarius Cawl, Logan Grimnar, and a host of other commanders. Against them stood Abaddon’s champions: Urkanthos, Typhus, Ahriman, Lucius the Eternal, and more.

When Cadia fell, the planet was destroyed outright. The pylons failed, the Eye of Terror surged outward, and the Great Rift tore across the galaxy. Abaddon’s secondary invasions spread the chaos further, while the Imperium reeled from losses in the trillions.

The aftermath reshaped the setting. The Cadian Gate was gone, the Imperium was split, and the Era Indomitus began. Guilliman returned, and the war for humanity’s survival entered a new and far grimmer phase.
