The Malcador

The Malcador, better known as Malcador the Sigillite, was the Emperor’s closest advisor, the man who ran the Imperium’s day-to-day machinery, and the psyker who gave his life on the Golden Throne so the Emperor could face Horus. He’s one of the most important figures of the Horus Heresy, and one of the least explained.

Who he was

Malcador was a Perpetual, a naturally immortal human, born on Terra around 300.M24 and still going strong in M31. By his own account he was over 6,700 years old during the Heresy, and he claimed to remember his birth down to the second.

He started out as a member of the Sigillites, a secret order dedicated to preserving humanity’s greatest relics. When the Emperor was still just another Terran warlord, Malcador threw in with him, handed over his order’s secrets and arcane tech, and reportedly suggested the title ‘Emperor’ in the first place. He served as advisor and administrator through the Unification Wars, then became First Lord of Terra and Grand Master of Assassins.

What he actually did

Malcador built the boring parts of the Imperium, which is to say the parts that made it work. He founded what became the Administratum, handled logistics and governance so the Emperor could focus on bigger things, and sat at the centre of the Council of Terra and the war councils of the Great Crusade.

He also ran the secret war. His hand-picked agents, the Knights Errant, did the quiet, deniable work, and that network fed into what became the Inquisition. Later in the Heresy he helped found the Grey Knights.

  • First Lord of Terra, effectively running the Imperium’s civil government
  • Grand Master of Assassins and head of the Officio Assassinorum
  • Founder of the Administratum and the Council of Terra
  • Ran the Knights Errant, the precursor to the Inquisition
  • Instrumental in founding the Grey Knights

The name Brahm al-Khadour

Malcador’s origins are deliberately murky. Jaghatai Khan claimed Horus had dug up his true identity: a Perpetual called Brahm al-Khadour, a ‘cursed wanderer’ who’d committed great atrocities during Old Night. Whether that’s the whole truth is anyone’s guess, and the Khan was passing on what Horus told him.

Rumours also floated that Malcador was somehow related to the Emperor. Nobody can verify it, and the Emperor never said.

How he died

During the Siege of Terra, the Emperor needed to take the fight to Horus aboard the Vengeful Spirit. Someone had to stay behind and hold the Golden Throne, keeping the Warp at bay. With Magnus on the traitor side, Malcador was the only psyker in the Imperium who could do it.

He sat down on the Throne and held it long enough for the Emperor, Rogal Dorn, Sanguinius and Constantin Valdor to reach Horus. The effort burned him out completely. He disintegrated on the Throne, and the Emperor later decreed him ‘Malcador the Hero’.

Legacy

Malcador’s successors tell you a lot about what he was. Roboute Guilliman eventually took the title First Lord of Terra. Khalid Hassan inherited the roles of Grand Master of Assassins and Master of the Sigillites.

The institutions he built, the Administratum, the Assassinorum, the Inquisition, outlasted him by ten thousand years. That’s the real measure of the man: the Imperium he helped design is still running on his blueprints, badly, but running.
