Lord Commander Dante rules the Blood Angels, and he’s been doing it for over a thousand years. He’s the oldest loyal Space Marine alive and, since the Great Rift tore the galaxy in half, the Lord Regent of Imperium Nihilus. If you only know one Blood Angel, it’s probably him.
Who is Lord Commander Dante?
Dante is the Chapter Master of the Blood Angels and one of the most experienced commanders in the Imperium. Born Luis Dante in 447.M40 on Baal Secundus, he’s held his Chapter’s highest rank for eleven hundred years. That’s not a typo. Most Space Marines don’t live a fraction of that.
His titles stack up: Commander Dante, Lord of the Angelic Host, and since the Era Indomitus, Lord Regent and Lord Warden of Imperium Nihilus. Chapter Masters who were still scouts when Dante was already a legend still speak of him with awe.
He started life as a Firstborn Astartes and later crossed the Rubicon Primaris, so he’s Primaris now too. Old, gold, and still fighting.
- Chapter Master of the Blood Angels for 1,100 years
- Oldest living loyal Space Marine, excluding dreadnoughts and Alatron
- Lord Regent and Lord Warden of Imperium Nihilus since the Era Indomitus
- Originally Firstborn, now Primaris after crossing the Rubicon
From the salt deserts to the stars
Baal Secundus is a radioactive desert where most clan members die before thirty. Dante grew up in one of its nomadic salt clans, stunted by malnutrition and radiation. His mother died giving birth to his stillborn brother, so his father Arreas raised him alone.
Arreas forbade him from taking the Angel’s Fall trials, not wanting to lose his last living relative. Dante left in secret anyway, crossing the Great Salt Waste alone. He nearly died of thirst, but a vision of the Sanguinor guided him to a mummified corpse with intact water flasks. That saved his life and let him finish the journey.
At the Place of Challenge he showed no special promise, but he survived. Chaplain Malafael inducted him into the Blood Angels as an Aspirant under Sanguinary Priest Araezon. Then came the weird part: after drinking the gene-seed-synthesised blood of Sanguinius, Dante fell into a year-long coma, crying out the names of fallen primarchs, dark gods, and long-banished daemons. When he woke, he trained as a battle-brother and then a Brother-Sergeant.
How he became Chapter Master
Dante reached the rank of Captain in 753.M40, taking command of the 5th Company. Then came the Kallius Insurrection of M40. Every Blood Angels captain except Dante was killed. The gathered chaplains and sanguinary priests decided he’d be the next Chapter Master. That’s how you get a job you didn’t apply for.
He’s led the Blood Angels ever since, through the Devastation of Baal and into the Era Indomitus. When Roboute Guilliman split the Imperium in two after the Great Rift opened, he named Dante Lord Regent of Imperium Nihilus, the half of the galaxy cut off from Terra. That makes him one of the most powerful figures in the Imperium, and one of the loneliest.
Campaigns and legendary deeds
Dante’s résumé is absurd. He clove the Bloodthirster Skarbrand in two at the Gates of Pandemonium. He drove the Orks from the twelve worlds of Blackfang. He led campaigns in Ultima Macharia and the Liberation of Canau. His presence alone inspires troops to acts of valour that are extraordinary even for Space Marines.
His most famous victory might be the Second War for Armageddon. When it came time to choose a leader for the intervention, the Masters of the Salamanders and Ultramarines unanimously asked for Dante. He spearheaded reinforcements at Hive Acheron, where the Ork horde was ripped apart by cannon and bomb. In the closing stages, his tactical genius broke the back of the Ork army with a massed Drop Pod assault.
To the common citizenry of the Imperium, he’s a legend: a golden-armoured hero who descends to save them in their darkest hour. His rallying words to his brothers capture it best: “For eleven hundred years, I have fought and I have seen the darkness in our galaxy… so fear not and be proud, for we are the sons of Sanguinius, the protectors of Mankind.”
- Clove the Bloodthirster Skarbrand in two at the Gates of Pandemonium
- Drove the Orks from the twelve worlds of Blackfang
- Led the charge at Hive Acheron during the Second War for Armageddon
- Unanimously chosen by Salamanders and Ultramarines Masters to lead the Armageddon intervention
Wargear and appearance
Dante wears the Death Mask of Sanguinius, a golden visage that echoes the Blood Angels’ primarch. He carries the Axe Mortalis and an inferno pistol, and his armour is ornate gold, marking both his rank and his incredible age.
He’s a living symbol to the Blood Angels and their successors. His longevity and command experience make him a strategic lynchpin in the dark Imperium Nihilus.
