Lorgar Aurelian is the Primarch of the Word Bearers and the first of his brothers to fall to Chaos. A preacher by nature, he spent his life chasing something worthy of worship, and that search broke the Imperium in half.
Early life on Colchis
Like the other Primarchs, Lorgar was scattered from Terra as an infant and landed on Colchis, a feudal desert world ruled by a rigid faith called the Covenant. He was taken in by Kor Phaeron, an exiled priest who saw the boy’s potential and raised him with a mix of doctrine and cruelty.
Lorgar grew fast and preached faster. He became convinced the Covenant’s many gods were really aspects of one truth, and his sermons drew a following large enough to topple the old order. When the Emperor finally arrived, Lorgar recognised him as the divine figure from his visions and knelt without hesitation.
The Great Crusade and the censure of Monarchia
Given command of the XVII Legion, which he renamed the Word Bearers, Lorgar turned his sons into missionaries as much as soldiers. They conquered slowly, stopping to build cathedrals and convert populations to the worship of the Emperor as a god.
That was the problem. The Emperor’s Imperial Truth denied all gods, and he’d forbidden his own worship. After repeated warnings, he sent Roboute Guilliman and the Ultramarines to destroy Monarchia, a city the Word Bearers had spent years turning into a monument to him. Lorgar and his Legion were forced to watch, then personally rebuked.
- Monarchia was razed as a public lesson, not a battle.
- The Emperor demanded Lorgar drop his religious practices.
- The humiliation shattered Lorgar’s faith in his father.
The fall to Chaos
Lost and desperate for something to believe in, Lorgar went looking for a new truth. His advisers Kor Phaeron and Erebus steered that search, and Erebus in particular was already tainted by the Ruinous Powers.
What Lorgar found was the Primordial Annihilator, the Chaos Gods in their rawest form. He embraced them completely, and the Word Bearers followed, dedicating themselves to Chaos Undivided. Lorgar then turned his talents on his brother Horus, using whispers, doubts and staged events to poison the Warmaster against the Emperor. That work set the Horus Heresy in motion.
The Heresy and after
During the Heresy Lorgar acted as its spiritual engine rather than its general. He led the Shadow Crusade into Ultramar alongside Angron, partly as revenge for Monarchia, and during that campaign he elevated Angron to daemonhood. He also clashed with Corvus Corax and won.
After Horus fell, Lorgar withdrew to Sicarus in the Eye of Terror and ascended as a Daemon Primarch of Chaos Undivided. He’s spent most of the millennia since in seclusion, writing and meditating, though his authority over the Word Bearers has never wavered.

Why he matters
Lorgar is the reason the Heresy happened at all. Without him, Horus might never have turned, and the Imperium might never have burned. He’s the first Primarch to fall and the one who made the fall possible for others.
There’s an irony fans love to point out: the Emperor forbade worship of himself, and the post-Heresy Imperium is now a galaxy-spanning church. Lorgar’s original vision came true, just not in any form he’d recognise. Whether he’s a tragic seeker or a petulant fanatic is still argued about, and that argument is half the fun.
