Nemesor Zahndrekh is a Necron commander of the Sautekh Dynasty who rules the tomb world of Gidrim. He’s one of the sharpest military minds on the Eastern Fringe, and he’s completely convinced he’s still a flesh-and-blood Necrontyr fighting ancient rebellions. That contradiction is what makes him one of the most memorable characters in Necron lore.
Who Zahndrekh is
Zahndrekh was born into Necrontyr nobility and trained at one of their most celebrated military academies, where he met his lifelong rival and confidant Setekh. After earning his commission he was sent to crush separatists in Yama during the Wars of Secession, and Vargard Obyron was assigned to him as a bodyguard. His victory there earned him the world of Gidrim as a reward.
Since biotransference he’s served the Sautekh Dynasty as a Nemesor, and his campaigns turned a minor backwater into a centre of power ruling roughly a dozen star systems.
The delusion that defines him
The Great Sleep damaged Zahndrekh’s mind. He genuinely believes he’s still a living Necrontyr, and that the wars he’s fighting are the secession conflicts of sixty-five million years ago.
So he doesn’t see Orks, Aeldari, or humans across the battlefield. He sees rebellious fellow Necrontyr trying to usurp the Triarch, and he treats their commanders as respected peers to be captured rather than slaughtered.
Honour, and why his court wants him gone
Zahndrekh’s code is genuine. He’s credited with the line “Will without honour is nothing”, refuses to deploy assassins like Wraiths or Deathmarks against a worthy foe, and prefers taking enemy leaders alive.
His grip on reality is shaky enough that plenty of Necron Lords, including some in his own royal court, would rather see him removed. He’s responded by fortifying his position, with Obyron serving as his personal bodyguard.
Wargear and battlefield reputation
In battle he carries a Staff of Light, identical to Setekh’s except for the green glow from its power core where Setekh’s burns blue, plus a Phase Shifter for protection.
Few Nemesors are praised as highly for strategy. His tactical record has won countless wars for the Sautekh, which is exactly why his delusions are tolerated at all.

FAQ
Why does Zahndrekh think he’s still alive?
The Great Sleep damaged his mind. He believes he’s a flesh-and-blood Necrontyr fighting the Wars of Secession, and nothing he sees on the battlefield changes that.
Who is Vargard Obyron?
Obyron is Zahndrekh’s personal bodyguard, assigned to him back when Zahndrekh was a living commander. He’s stayed loyal ever since, even as other Necron Lords plot against his master.
Is Zahndrekh actually a good commander?
Yes. His delusions don’t blunt his tactics, and he’s considered one of the finest strategists in the Sautekh Dynasty, which is a big part of why he’s still in charge.
