Gidrim

Gidrim is a Necron tomb world in the Ultima Segmentum, part of Imotekh the Stormlord’s Sautekh Dynasty. It’s ruled by Nemesor Zahndrekh, and under him it’s grown from an unimportant planet into the hub of a small empire.

What Gidrim is

Gidrim is a tomb world: a planet where Necrons lay dormant through the Great Sleep, waiting to rise again. It belongs to the Sautekh Dynasty, the largest and most aggressive Necron power in the galaxy, and sits somewhere in the Ultima Segmentum (the exact sector isn’t recorded).

Its ruler is Nemesor Zahndrekh, one of the dynasty’s most celebrated commanders. He was given the world as a reward for crushing separatists on Yama during the ancient Wars of Secession, back when he was still Necrontyr.

Zahndrekh and his grip on reality

The Great Sleep did a number on Zahndrekh’s mind. He genuinely believes he’s still a flesh-and-blood Necrontyr fighting the Wars of Secession, so he treats Orks, Eldar and humans as rebellious subjects rather than alien enemies.

That’s made him a target. Plenty of Necron Lords, including some in his own royal court, would happily see him removed from power. He’s survived because he’s paranoid about exactly that, and because Vargard Obyron, his personal bodyguard, is lethally good at the job.

From backwater to power base

Gidrim didn’t start out important. Zahndrekh’s string of military victories turned it into a centre of power that now controls around a dozen star systems, effectively a miniature empire inside Sautekh space.

Few Nemesors have a reputation for strategy to match his. His battlefield record has won countless wars for the Sautekh, even if he thinks he’s fighting for the Triarch.

He’s known as a military genius along the Eastern Fringe, a reputation that’s stuck across multiple editions of the codex and the novella Severed.

Zahndrekh’s code of honour

Zahndrekh lives by a strict code. His maxim, ‘Will without honour is nothing’, sums it up. In battle against an honoured foe, he refuses to use assassins such as Wraiths or Deathmarks, and he wants enemy commanders captured rather than killed. He treats them as respected Necrontyr leaders, not vermin.

That’s a rare thing among Necron commanders, and it’s part of why he’s both admired and underestimated. His enemies sometimes mistake his honour for weakness, which is a mistake they don’t live to repeat.

Background and wargear

Zahndrekh was born into the elite echelon of Necrontyr nobility, around 65 million years before the present day. He attended one of the most celebrated military academies, where he met his close confidant and rival Setekh. He looks back on those days as the best of his life.

After winning his commission, he was given an army and sent to fight separatists on Yama during the Wars of Secession. Vargard Obyron, already a veteran, was assigned to him during that campaign. Obyron wasn’t just a later bodyguard; he was a seasoned warrior from the start.

In battle, Zahndrekh wields a Staff of Light with a green power core, identical to Setekh’s except Setekh’s blazes blue. He also carries a Phase Shifter.
