The Battle of Terra’s Orbit

The Battle of Terra’s Orbit is the void war that raged above humanity’s homeworld during the Siege of Terra in M31. While Horus’s ground forces hammered the Imperial Palace, fleets and boarding actions decided whether Terra could be reinforced, evacuated, or burned from above.

What the battle of Terra’s orbit actually was

It’s the space half of the Siege of Terra, not a separate war. The Traitor armada had to break the orbital defences, minefields, and loyalist fleets before it could land the armies that would assault the Palace.

That made the orbit a fight over access. Whoever held it could drop reinforcements, supply the defenders, or bombard the surface. Neither side ever held it cleanly for long.

  • Theatre: Terra’s orbit, the Luna approaches, and the shipping lanes above the Palace.
  • Duration: the void phase ran alongside the wider siege, roughly 200 days.
  • Result: a pyrrhic loyalist victory. The Traitors were broken, but Terra was left in ruins.

Who fought above Terra

The loyalist fleet was a patchwork of Legion and Imperial assets. Rogal Dorn commanded the overall defence, with the Imperial Fists holding the walls, the White Scars striking from the void, and the Blood Angels committed wherever the line was breaking.

The Traitor armada was led by Horus Lupercal’s Sons of Horus, backed by Iron Warriors, Death Guard, World Eaters, Thousand Sons, Emperor’s Children, Word Bearers, and Night Lords elements, plus the Dark Mechanicum.

Why the orbit mattered so much

Terra’s orbital defences were the only thing keeping the Traitor fleet from simply glassing the Palace. Once those were breached, the war became a ground siege, and the loyalists lost the ability to choose where they fought.

Control of the orbit also decided whether reinforcements could reach Terra. The White Scars and Dark Angels elements fought hard to keep lanes open, and the Traitors fought just as hard to close them.

How the void war ended

The Traitors won the orbitals, but not the war. Horus lowered his shields aboard the Vengeful Spirit to draw the Emperor into a duel, and that gamble killed him. With Horus dead, the Traitor fleet broke apart and fled.

The cost was enormous. Terra’s orbit was littered with wreckage, the Imperial Palace was wrecked, and the Imperium entered the Long War that followed the Heresy.

FAQ

Was the Battle of Terra’s Orbit the same as the Siege of Terra?

It’s the space portion of the same campaign. The Siege of Terra covers both the void war above the planet and the ground assault on the Imperial Palace.

Who won the Battle of Terra’s Orbit?

The Traitors initially broke through the orbital defences, but the loyalists won the wider siege when Horus was killed aboard the Vengeful Spirit.

Why didn’t the Traitors just bombard Terra from orbit?

Terra’s orbital defences, minefields, and loyalist fleets made that costly, and Horus wanted to face the Emperor directly rather than destroy the prize he’d come for.
