Ezekyle Abaddon, better known as Abaddon the Despoiler, is the Warmaster of Chaos and master of the Black Legion. He’s the greatest threat the Imperium has ever faced, and he’s spent ten thousand years trying to finish what Horus started.
Who is ezekyle abaddon?
Abaddon was born on Cthonia, a gang world, the son of a powerful warlord named Tarkeraddon. He refused his father’s coming-of-age ritual, which required killing his closest friends, and killed his father instead. That ferocity caught the attention of the Luna Wolves, and he became a Space Marine.
He rose fast. Abaddon served as First Captain of the Luna Wolves under Horus Lupercal, and he was a member of the Mournival, the four-man inner council that advised the Warmaster. He fought in the Great Crusade, then in the Horus Heresy that tore the Imperium apart.
From Horus’s heir to master of the Black Legion
After Horus died at Terra, his Legion, the Sons of Horus, fell apart. Abaddon gathered the survivors and rebuilt them as the Black Legion, painting their armour black to mourn their old identity. He took the title of Warmaster and made himself the undisputed leader of Chaos’s forces in the Eye of Terror.
He isn’t a Daemon Primarch. Abaddon has refused to fully give himself to the Chaos Gods, because doing so would bind him to the Warp and limit what he can do in realspace. He uses Chaos without belonging to it, which makes him far more dangerous than most of his rivals.
The Black Crusades
Abaddon has launched thirteen Black Crusades, massive invasions out of the Eye of Terror aimed at breaking the Imperium. Most were repelled or stalled, but each one weakened the Imperium and strengthened his position. The Thirteenth Black Crusade cracked the Cadian Gate and tore the galaxy open.
That campaign triggered the Great Rift, the warp storm that split the Imperium in two and ushered in the Era Indomitus. Abaddon didn’t just survive the chaos he caused, he’s exploited it, pushing into the Vigilus system and launching the Arks of Omen campaign.
- Early crusades tested Imperial defences and gathered warbands under his banner.
- The Thirteenth Black Crusade broke Cadia and created the Great Rift.
- Vigilus and the Arks of Omen show Abaddon’s reach stretching across the galaxy.
What makes him dangerous
Abaddon is a brilliant strategist and a terrifying fighter. He wields the Talon of Horus, a lightning claw taken from his dead primarch, and Drach’nyen, a daemon sword of immense power. He’s blessed by all four Chaos Gods, and he commands the largest and most organised Chaos force in existence.
His goal hasn’t changed in ten thousand years: tear down the false Emperor and sit on the ruins of Terra. Whether he’ll succeed is the big question hanging over the setting.
Some sources suggest Abaddon is a clone of Horus, but that’s rumour in-universe rather than confirmed fact.

Is Abaddon a clone of Horus?
It’s rumoured in the lore, but it’s never been confirmed. He’s Horus’s successor and heir in every way that matters to his followers.
