The Battle of the Eternity Gate was the climax of the Siege of Terra, when the forces of Chaos made their final push to break into the Sanctum Imperialis and reach the Golden Throne. It’s one of the most important battles in Warhammer 40k history, and it’s where Sanguinius made his last stand.
What was the Battle of the Eternity Gate?
The Eternity Gate is the last gateway into the Sanctum Imperialis, the inner sanctum of the Imperial Palace that holds the Golden Throne and the Emperor himself. During the Horus Heresy, when Horus’s traitor legions besieged Terra, the Eternity Gate became the final obstacle between Chaos and the Emperor.
The battle there was the decisive moment of the Siege of Terra. If the gate fell, the Emperor would be defenceless. The traitors threw everything they had at it, and the loyalists knew they couldn’t let it break.
Sanguinius and the defence
Primarch Sanguinius of the Blood Angels led the defence of the Eternity Gate. No one else could hold back the ferocity of the assault, and he stood at the gate with his sons and the Custodes.
The fighting was brutal and relentless. Sanguinius held the line until he was eventually drawn away to face Horus aboard the Vengeful Spirit, where he met his end. His stand at the gate is remembered as one of the greatest acts of sacrifice in Imperial history.
The gate itself
The Eternity Gate is over a kilometre tall and forged from tempered adamantium layered with ceramite. Its outer face is sheathed in gold and decorated with an image of the Emperor triumphant during the Great Crusade, standing over broken enemies.
Two Warhound Titans of Legio Ignatum stand guard outside, alongside 10,000 Adeptus Custodes. An elite core of 300 Custodes called the Companions guard the Emperor directly. The gate has never been breached.
Later attacks and legacy
The Eternity Gate has been attacked again since the Heresy. During the War of the Beast, an Eldar raid got within sight of the gate before the Custodes defeated it. A later Chaos uprising known as the Siege of the Eternity Gate also took place.
These attacks show that the gate remains a target, but it’s also a symbol of the Imperium’s endurance. The Battle of the Eternity Gate during the Horus Heresy is the one that matters most, though, because it’s where the fate of humanity was decided.
