The First Tyrannic War

The First Tyrannic War was the Imperium’s first real encounter with the Tyranids. In 745.M41, Hive Fleet Behemoth tore through the Eastern Fringe, and the Ultramarines only stopped it at Macragge, at a cost that reshaped how the Imperium thinks about alien threats.

What started it

For most of the Imperium, the Tyranids were a rumour from the edges of the galaxy until Behemoth arrived. The hive fleet pushed into the Eastern Fringe and consumed everything in its path, including the world of Tyran.

That was the wake-up call. The Imperium had fought Orks, Eldar, and Chaos for ten thousand years, but this was something else: a single organism stripping planets down to bare rock and moving on.

The campaigns of the First Tyrannic War

The war wasn’t one battle. It was a string of campaigns that marked Behemoth’s path through the Eastern Fringe, and each one taught the Imperium something worse about what it was facing.

The Fall of Tyran came first. The planet was annihilated early, a clear sign that the Tyranids didn’t negotiate, occupy, or leave anything behind.

The Lacrima Dolorosa Crusade is the other named engagement from this period. It’s less famous than Macragge, but it’s part of the same wave of fighting that defined the war.

The Battle for Macragge was the decisive one. Behemoth’s advance was finally halted at the Ultramarines’ homeworld, and Marneus Calgar led the defence against overwhelming numbers. The Chapter took heavy losses, including much of its First Company.

The Battle for Macragge and its aftermath

The battle ended with Behemoth broken, but it wasn’t a clean victory. The Ultramarines survived, but the wider region was left scarred and depopulated. It also proved the Tyranids could be beaten, though never cheaply.

That’s the lesson the Imperium carried forward. Macragge became the template for how to fight a hive fleet: mass everything, expect to lose most of it, and hope the fleet breaks before you do.

How the later wars played out

The First Tyrannic War is the earliest of four major conflicts. The Second Tyrannic War came in 990-993.M41, when Hive Fleet Kraken invaded and was narrowly defeated. Its linked engagements include the Ichar IV Campaign, the Battle of Iyanden, and the Fall of Sotha.

The Third Tyrannic War started in 997.M41 and is still ongoing. Hive Fleet Leviathan is the threat this time, with the Battle of Tarsis Ultra, the Cryptus Campaign, and the Devastation of Baal among its major engagements.

The Fourth Tyrannic War began in the Era Indomitus, when the largest Leviathan invasion yet hit the Western Reaches of Segmentum Pacificus. Three massive tendrils led the push, and the Imperium named them Nautilon, Promethor, and Grendyllus.

Outside the numbered wars, there are other notable conflicts against the Tyranids: Gorgon, Malan’tai, Naga, and the Octarius War. They share the same roots in that first contact, even if they don’t carry a war number.

Why it matters

The First Tyrannic War set the template for everything that followed. It showed the Imperium that the Tyranids weren’t a local nuisance but an existential threat, and it triggered a massive military mobilisation across the Eastern Fringe.

It’s also the origin point for the later Tyrannic Wars. Behemoth was just the first hive fleet, and the Imperium has been fighting off new ones ever since.

The scale is hard to overstate. Imperial Guard casualties have been so high that it seems as if the Tyranids are annihilating them faster than they can be deployed. Many minor races have been driven extinct, and thousands of planets have been reduced to lifeless husks.
