A psychic null is a rare human mutant whose mind smothers psychic energy around them. In a galaxy full of daemons and sorcery, that makes them one of the Imperium’s strangest and most valuable weapons.
What a psychic null actually is
Psychic nulls go by a lot of names: blanks, Untouchables, Pariahs, Blacksouls. Whatever you call them, the idea is the same. They’re humans born with a negative presence in the warp rather than a positive one.
Where a normal psyker channels warp energy, a null drains it. Their soul reads as a void, and psychic phenomena simply stop working near them. Not weakened. Cancelled.
The Imperium classifies them as omega-minus psykers, which is the bottom of the Assignment scale. Some sources just say omega class.
Why they matter
In a setting where a single rogue psyker can doom a planet, a person who shuts down warp powers is priceless. Nulls are immune to basically every psychic effect, from mind-reading to daemonic possession.
That immunity cuts both ways. Ordinary people find nulls deeply unsettling, often without knowing why. Being near one feels wrong on a level most humans can’t articulate.
- Immune to psychic attacks and possession
- Suppress nearby warp phenomena in a radius
- Feared and shunned by normal humans
- Extremely rare, and mostly born to null parents
Biology and the pariah gene
Blanks are tied to something called the pariah gene. It’s inheritable, and there’s a clear pattern of null parents producing null children, which isn’t true for regular psykers.
Some worlds produce more blanks than others. The feral population of Vessor is the go-to example. Lesser negative psykers exist too, but they’re only partially cut off from the warp, so they don’t count as true blanks.
The origin of the gene is genuinely unknown. The Emperor banned research into it after early Great Crusade experiments by the Archotechnologist Corps and the Mechanicum went badly wrong.
Where you’ll find them
The most famous nulls are the Culexus Assassins and the Sisters of Silence. Both organisations exist specifically to use blanks as weapons against psykers and daemons.
The Inquisition recruits them too, and the Collegia Titanica has its own uses for them. Rogue Traders sometimes keep one on the crew, which tells you how useful a walking anti-warp field can be.
| Organisation | Role |
|---|---|
| Culexus Assassins | Officio Assassinorum killers built to hunt psykers |
| Sisters of Silence | All-female order of nulls serving the Emperor |
| Inquisition | Uses nulls as agents and anti-daemon assets |
| Collegia Titanica | Employed in Titan crews and support roles |

FAQ
Is a psychic null the same as a blank?
Yes. Blank, Untouchable, Pariah, Blacksoul, and psychic null all describe the same thing. The terms come from different Imperial institutions and eras.
Can a psychic null use psychic powers?
No. They don’t channel the warp at all. Their gift is the opposite: they cancel it out around them.
Are blanks always human?
According to the sources, yes. Blanks and lesser negative psykers appear to be exclusive to humanity, unlike regular psykers, who show up across many species.
