The Schism of Mars was a civil war that tore the Mechanicum apart in the opening years of the Horus Heresy. It turned the red planet into a battlefield between loyalists and traitors, and it’s the reason the Dark Mechanicum exists at all.
What the schism actually was
It’s the Martian civil war of 005 to 006.M31, fought between the Mechanicum loyal to the Imperium and a breakaway faction that sided with Horus. This wasn’t a small rebellion. Every level of Martian society got dragged in, from menials and tech-priests up through Knight houses and Titan Legions, with Space Marines and Imperial Army units pulled in too.
The fighting ended in a traitor victory. Mars was then blockaded from 006 to 015.M31, cutting the Imperium off from its biggest forge world for nearly a decade.
Why it happened
The roots go back years before Horus turned. Mars was already tense, with Magi arguing bitterly over the nature of the Omnissiah. A lot of them believed the Emperor was its avatar. Fabricator-General Kelbor-Hal led the faction that said he wasn’t, and that the real Omnissiah hadn’t shown up yet.
Kelbor-Hal also had personal grievances. He resented the Emperor turning Mars into an arms factory for the Great Crusade, and he hated the ban on certain research, artificial intelligence especially. When Horus made contact through Regulus, the Mechanicum envoy to the Warmaster, Kelbor-Hal already had reason to listen.
Who fought
On the loyalist side you had Fabricator-Locum Kane, Adept Koriel Zeth, Adept Ipluvien Maximal, and a mix of Mechanicum Protectors, Skitarii, Titan Legions like Legio Tempestus, the Knights of Taranis, plus Imperial Fists, Saturnyne Rams, Jovian Grenadiers, and Custodians.
Against them stood Kelbor-Hal, Adept Urtzi Malevolus, Adept Lukas Chrom, and their New Mechanicum, backed by mutated Protectors, traitor Skitarii, servitors, Titans from Legio Mortis and others, and war machines like the Ordinati.
| Loyalists | Traitors |
|---|---|
| Fabricator-Locum Kane | Fabricator-General Kelbor-Hal |
| Adept Koriel Zeth (KIA) | Adept Urtzi Malevolus |
| Adept Ipluvien Maximal (KIA) | Adept Lukas Chrom |
| Legio Tempestus, Knights of Taranis | Legio Mortis, Death Stalkers, Legio Magna |
| Imperial Fists, Saturnyne Rams, Custodians | Alpha Legion elements, traitor Iron Hands |
How it played out
The schism had distinct phases. It opened with the death of innocence, the moment the violence became open war, then Rogal Dorn sent forces in. The Imperium evacuated what it could from Mars, and there was a raid on Phobos.
Later came the battle for Vault Tharsis Deca-Nine, the Perditum Incursion, and the Arca Silentus. Casualties on both sides were heavy, and the loyalists eventually abandoned the field.
Why it matters
The schism gave Horus the industrial muscle of Mars, or at least a big chunk of it, and it created the Dark Mechanicum: the traitor tech-priests who’ve been a Chaos faction ever since. It also left the Imperium without its primary forge world during the darkest years of the Heresy.
If you’re following Mechanicum lore, this is the fracture point. Everything the Adeptus Mechanicus is in 40k traces back to who picked which side here.
