The Mournival was the four-captain advisory council inside the Luna Wolves Legion. It had no official rank, but its members spoke with authority second only to Horus himself, and their story tracks the Legion’s fall from loyal Warmaster’s tool to a broken brotherhood.
What the Mournival actually was
Think of it as Horus’s inner circle, not a formal command tier. It sat outside the Legion’s chain of command and existed only as an internal body, which meant its power came from proximity and trust rather than rank.
Its job was broad. The four captains advised Horus on war and diplomacy, handled political posturing when he needed it, and kept an eye on the Legion’s moral character and philosophy.
- Four captains, second in influence only to Horus
- No official weight in the Legion’s command structure
- Advised on warfare, diplomacy, and Legion culture
- Members marked by a moon-phase symbol on the helm above the right eyepiece
Who sat on the last pre-Heresy Mournival
By the end of the Great Crusade, the four were Ezekyle Abaddon, ‘Little’ Horus Aximand, Tarik Torgaddon, and Garviel Loken. Each wore a different lunar phase on their helmet, and the phases matched their personalities in ways fans still argue about.
Shortly after Ullanor and Horus’s elevation to Warmaster, Hastur Sejanus commissioned four silver rings, one for each moon phase, for himself and the other three. Sejanus’s own ring was destroyed when the silversmith was killed by Captain Serghar Targost, and it’s unclear whether the other three ever reached Abaddon, Torgaddon, and Aximand.
| Member | Moon phase |
|---|---|
| Ezekyle Abaddon | Full Moon |
| Tarik Torgaddon | Gibbous Moon |
| Horus Aximand | Half Moon |
| Garviel Loken | New Moon |
Where the name and the idea came from
The iterator Memed says ‘mournival’ is an old Franc word for holding four court or face cards in a card game, usually a winning hand. That fits a council built around four voices.
The origin story isn’t clean. Garviel Loken believed the Mournival had existed since the Legion’s earliest days, at least two hundred years. Tarik Torgaddon told him it grew out of the Legion’s informal warrior lodge, and Captain Serghar Targost claimed that lodge only formed after the Luna Wolves first visited Davin. If Targost is right, the Mournival could be closer to sixty years old. The sources disagree, and the Legion itself may not have kept a straight story.
How it broke apart
As Horus fell to Chaos, the Mournival split down the middle. Abaddon and Aximand stayed with their Primarch. Loken and Torgaddon stayed loyal to the Emperor, and both died at Isstvan III, ending the original brotherhood.
Aximand later pushed to rebuild it. After debate and a field proving, he and Abaddon inducted Falkus Kibre and Grael Noctua. The revived Mournival didn’t last either. During the Siege of Terra, everyone except Abaddon was killed at the Saturnine Wall, and the council was unofficially abolished.
