Terra’s Palace, formally the Imperial Palace, is the Emperor of Mankind’s seat of power and the capital city of the Imperium. It’s the most heavily defended place in human space, and pretty much every major event in Imperial history either happened here or was felt here.
What is Terra’s Palace?
It’s both a palace and a city, built across a huge chunk of Terra’s Asian continent. From orbit you’d see kilometres-high monolithic and pyramidal structures linked together, covered in landing pads and defence guns.
The Adeptus Terra runs the Imperium from here, but the Adeptus Custodes oversee the Palace itself. Its macro-habs and space ports punch through the atmosphere into the void, while its sub-levels dig hundreds of miles into Terra’s bedrock.
- Seat of the Emperor and capital of the Imperium.
- Divided into the Inner and Outer Palaces.
- Administered by the Adeptus Terra, guarded by the Adeptus Custodes.
- So vast that no single record lists all its vaults, corridors, and chambers.
History and construction
Construction started after the Unification Wars as a monument to the Emperor’s might and mankind’s new unity. It was built around the Himalayan Mountains by Terra’s Masonic Guilds, and early management fell to the Seneschals of the Departmento Regia Interior.
Rogal Dorn oversaw the defences, which annoyed Perturabo no end. Work was still going on by the end of the Great Crusade, so the build took at least 200 years.
Attacks on the Palace
The Palace has only come under major attack twice. The first was the Siege of Terra at the end of the Horus Heresy, when Dorn stripped much of its splendour to turn it into a fortress. Scars from that battle are still visible in the 41st Millennium.
The second came after the Thirteenth Black Crusade. The Great Rift opened and Khorne’s legions assaulted the Palace, but the reborn Roboute Guilliman turned them back before they reached the Eternity Gate. Smaller incidents include an Eldar raid and debris damage during the War of the Beast.
| Event | What happened |
|---|---|
| Siege of Terra | Main fighting of the Horus Heresy; Dorn fortified the Palace. |
| Eldar raid | Post-Heresy attack on the Palace. |
| War of the Beast | Damage from falling debris. |
| Thirteenth Black Crusade | Khorne’s legions assailed the Palace; Guilliman stopped them. |
Layout and notable areas
The Palace splits into the Outer Palace, which handles much of the day-to-day Imperial bureaucracy, and the Inner Palace, the Emperor’s own domain. The Outer Defences ring the whole complex.
Notable spots include the Avenue of Statues, where pilgrims gather, and the Eternity Gate, the last threshold before the Inner Palace. The techno-urbanic serf tribes and clan holdings inside the walls could populate entire star systems.
