The Ordo Malleus is the Inquisition’s daemonhunting branch, the one that deals with Chaos in its rawest form. If a daemon claws its way into realspace, these are the people the Imperium sends to kill it.
What the Ordo Malleus actually does
Their job is simple to state and almost impossible to do: investigate and destroy physical manifestations of Chaos anywhere in the Imperium. That covers everything from a single possessed soldier to a full daemonic incursion swallowing a world.
They’re known as Daemonhunters, and the name fits. Members are picked for iron will as much as skill, because facing the Ruinous Powers up close tends to break lesser minds. It’s also why they’re the smallest of the Inquisition’s three major Ordos. Few people can do this work and stay sane.
Their headquarters sits on the moons of Saturn. They answer to the Inquisition as a whole, though no single leader runs the Ordo outright. An Inquisitorial Representative speaks for them.
History and the Charge of the Malleus
The Ordo traces its roots back to the Emperor himself, before his internment on the Golden Throne. In the aftermath of the Horus Heresy, knowing his wounds were fatal, he set up bodies to guard humanity from the Warp in his place.
The founding moment is tied to a decree called the Charge of the Malleus, said to be inscribed in gold over the Ultimate Gateway of the Malleus Fortress on Titan. Sources disagree on the exact timeline, though. Some say the Ordo was only formally split from the Ordo Xenos during the War of the Beast, around 546.M32, after Inquisitorial Representative Wienand met with the first Grey Knights Supreme Grand Master, Janus.
Either way, the Daemonhunters based around Saturn stayed a closely guarded secret for a long time. During the War of the Beast, even the High Lords of Terra didn’t know they existed.
The Grey Knights
The Ordo’s Chamber Militant is the Grey Knights, a Space Marine chapter built specifically to fight daemons. They’re the muscle behind the daemonhunting mission, and they’re equipped for it in ways no ordinary chapter is.
When the 13th Black Crusade brought a massive daemonic manifestation onto Cadia, the Grey Knights teleported straight into the thick of it. It was the largest showing of their numbers since the First War of Armageddon.
- Chamber Militant of the Ordo Malleus
- Purpose-built to fight daemons, more than Chaos worshippers
- Deployed in force to Cadia during the 13th Black Crusade
How the Ordo Malleus fits into the wider Inquisition
The Inquisition splits its work between three major Ordos. The Ordo Malleus handles daemons. The Ordo Xenos handles alien threats. The Ordo Hereticus handles heresy and internal corruption.
There’s overlap, and it causes friction. A cult summoning daemons could fall under Malleus or Hereticus depending on who gets there first. In practice, the Ordo Malleus gets involved when the Warp itself is the problem.
