The Sol System

The Sol System is humanity’s birthplace and the heart of the Imperium. Its most famous world is Holy Terra, the Emperor’s throneworld, and it’s also home to Mars, the forge world that arms the Imperium’s war machine.

What the Sol System is

In the Age of the Imperium, the old Solar System goes by the Sol System or Terran System. It sits in Segmentum Solar, the region of the galaxy named after it, and it’s the single most important place in human space.

Everything about it is tied to the Emperor. He unified Terra, then Mars, then the whole system during the Unification Wars and the Great Crusade, and it’s been the Imperium’s capital ever since.

The worlds and bodies that matter

The system’s identity comes down to a handful of places. Terra is the Throneworld, with Luna orbiting above it. Mars is the Forge World and the Adeptus Mechanicus’ capital, with its own moons Phobos and Deimos (Deimos later moved to Titan).

Further out, Jupiter is a Forge and Mining World, Saturn hosts an Inquisitorial fortress, and Titan is the Grey Knights’ homeworld. The Asteroid Belt and Kuiper Belt are packed with mining facilities and colonies.

How it’s defended

The Sol System is the most heavily fortified place in the Imperium. Two stable Warp routes, the Elysian Gate near Uranus and the Khthonic Gate near Neptune, were built during the Dark Age of Technology and are watched constantly.

Mars is a fortress as much as a factory, Titan is a Chapter homeworld, and Saturn holds an Inquisitorial stronghold. Terra itself is the last line of defence, and it’s been tested more than once.

Why it matters in the lore

The system has seen catastrophe before. During the Horus Heresy, the Schism of Mars and the Solar War turned it into a battleground, and Horus’ forces besieged Terra before being thrown back in the Great Scouring.

It hasn’t seen all-out war since, but it’s been hit repeatedly: the War of the Beast, the Age of Apostasy, a mysterious Necron raid on Mars in late M41, and the Battle of Lion’s Gate. During the Noctis Aeterna, the Khornate Crusade of Slaughter threatened the system until an Indomitus Crusade fleet under Cassandra VanLeskus broke it, and Grey Knights had to purge Daemons from Ganymede.
