Craftworld Ulthwé is one of the largest and most influential Eldar craftworlds left after the Fall. It’s famous for its powerful seers, its standing army of Black Guardians, and its perilous position on the edge of the Eye of Terror.
What is Craftworld Ulthwé?
Ulthwé (short for Ulthanash Shelwé, “Song of Ulthanash”) is a major craftworld that drifted too close to the Eye of Terror and now orbits it. That location defines everything about it: constant daemonic attacks, ruined sections of the craftworld itself, and a culture built around seeing threats before they arrive.
It’s often called “the Damned” because of the endless wars it fights against Chaos. But it’s also respected and feared as a saviour, since its seers meddle in the affairs of other races more than any other craftworld, trying to steer fate toward Eldar survival.
Seers, warlocks, and the Seer Council
Ulthwé leans harder on the Path of the Seer than any other craftworld. Its Seer Council, formerly led by the legendary Eldrad Ulthran, guides the craftworld both openly and secretly. They interfere in the affairs of other races, sometimes in ways that seem pointless or random, because they’re playing a long game against Chaos.
The craftworld’s proximity to the Eye of Terror seems to amplify psychic potential in its population, producing an unusually large number of Warlocks. Whatever the cause, Ulthwé’s seers are said to see further and more precisely than those of other craftworlds.
The Black Guardians and military doctrine
Because Ulthwé trains so many of its people as seers and warlocks, it has far fewer Aspect Warriors than most craftworlds. To make up for that, it keeps a standing professional army called the Black Guardians, named for their armour. They’re better trained and more disciplined than typical Guardian defenders, ready to respond to attacks at a moment’s notice.
The craftworld isn’t completely without Aspect Warriors. Dark Reapers are the most common shrine on Ulthwé, and many Black Guardians have served time in that Aspect. In battle, Ulthwé favours shock attacks and psychic dominance over sheer numbers.
- Main colours: black and bone.

- Speciality: divination, shock attacks, and psychic warfare.

History and connections
Ulthwé was one of the last craftworlds to leave the Segmentum Obscurus, which is why it ended up so close to the Eye of Terror. Over ten thousand years it’s suffered thousands of attacks and its craftworld bears the scars.
Its most infamous moment came during the Horus Heresy, when Eldrad Ulthran tried to warn the Imperium about Horus’s fall. The message was delivered to the wrong primarch, Fulgrim, who was already corrupted, and the meeting ended in violence. That botched contact poisoned Imperial-Eldar relations for millennia.
Ulthwé has still worked with the Imperium when it suits them, though these alliances usually fall apart the moment the immediate threat is gone. The craftworld has also shaped events on a galactic scale, like diverting Waaagh! Ghazghkull toward Armageddon instead of an isolated craftworld.

Eldrad Ulthran, the former Chief Farseer. He’s one of the most powerful and controversial Eldar characters in the setting, known for his meddling in the affairs of other races.
Why is Ulthwé called ‘the Damned’?
Because it orbits so close to the Eye of Terror that it’s under constant attack from Chaos. Its craftworld is scarred and partly in ruins from those battles.
What are the Black Guardians?
They’re Ulthwé’s standing army of Guardians, more professional and better trained than the citizen militia of other craftworlds. They exist because Ulthwé has fewer Aspect Warriors to rely on.
