Vargard Obyron is a Necron Lord of the Sautekh Dynasty who serves as the personal bodyguard and fixer for the eccentric Nemesor Zahndrekh. He’s the one keeping a brilliant but deluded commander alive, and he’s a terrifying fighter in his own right.
Who is Vargard Obyron?
Obyron is a Necron Lord from the tomb world of Gidrim, born among the Necrontyr roughly 65 million years ago. He holds the title of Vargard, a role that combines bodyguard, enforcer, and right hand to his Overlord.
He’s fully lucid. Unlike Zahndrekh, who believes he’s still a living Necrontyr noble campaigning across the galaxy, Obyron sees their reality clearly. He gave up trying to wake his master long ago and just handles the mess instead.
Why Obyron matters
Zahndrekh would’ve been assassinated or deposed centuries ago without him. Obyron has personally crushed court rebellions on Gidrim and quietly executed prisoners Zahndrekh spared out of a misplaced sense of honour.
He’s also a top-tier commander in his own right, more than a bodyguard. In 831.M41 he fought and beat White Scars Captain Kor’sarro Khan and Eldar Ranger Illic Nightspear at the same time, along with a crowd of escaped prisoners.
His Ghostwalk Mantle lets him step through dimensions and reappear elsewhere on the battlefield, dragging any unit he leads along with him. That mobility makes him a nightmare to pin down.
Obyron on the tabletop
In 10th edition he’s a 5-wound character with a 2+ save and a devastating-wounds Warscythe. He’s a Leader, so he attaches to a unit and buffs it.
His Ghostwalk Mantle gives the unit he leads Fights First, which is huge for a melee brick. If he’s in the same unit as Nemesor Zahndrekh, characters in that unit get Feel No Pain 4+, making the pair annoyingly hard to remove.

Obyron and Zahndrekh
The two are inseparable. Zahndrekh supplies the strategic genius and the delusions; Obyron supplies the clarity and the killing. Together they’ve proven close to unbeatable on the battlefield.
It’s a genuinely tragic pairing. Obyron is loyal to the point of self-sacrifice, fully aware that the lord he serves is living in a fantasy, and chooses to protect that fantasy anyway.
