Horus Lupercal was the Emperor’s most trusted son and the Warmaster of the Great Crusade. His fall to Chaos tore the Imperium apart in the Horus Heresy, the civil war that shaped everything that came after.
Who Horus was
Horus was one of the twenty Primarchs, gene-forged sons of the Emperor created just after the Age of Strife. Like his brothers, he was snatched away by the Chaos Gods as an infant and scattered across the galaxy.
His pod landed on Cthonia, a gang-ridden world close to Sol. A crime lord named Khageddon raised him under the name Nergui, and Horus grew up fighting in the tunnels before the Emperor found him. Traditional accounts say he was the first Primarch rediscovered.
Rise to Warmaster
Horus took command of the Luna Wolves, the Space Marine Legion built from his own genetic template. He led them through the Great Crusade, winning battle after battle at the Emperor’s side.
That record made him the Emperor’s favourite son and the brother most other Primarchs respected. When the Emperor stepped back from the Crusade, he named Horus Warmaster, putting him second only to the Emperor in authority.
- Legion: Luna Wolves, later renamed the Sons of Horus
- Title: Warmaster of the Great Crusade
- Homeworld: Cthonia
- Genetic father: the Emperor; genetic mother: Erda
The betrayal and the Heresy
Chaos corrupted Horus, and he turned the forces he’d been given against the Imperium he’d helped build. The result was the Horus Heresy, a galaxy-wide civil war that split the Legions and burned whole worlds.
It ended aboard his flagship, the Vengeful Spirit, in 014.M31. The Emperor destroyed Horus’s soul, but the cost was catastrophic: the Emperor was mortally wounded and interred in the Golden Throne.
| Event | Detail |

Why he still matters
Horus is the reason the Imperium looks the way it does. The Heresy ended the Great Crusade, locked the Emperor into the Golden Throne, and turned the Legions into the Chapters of the modern era.
His legacy runs through the Traitor Legions and the Long War. Ezekyle Abaddon, his former first captain, took up the mantle as Warmaster of Chaos and has led the Black Legion ever since.
Worship of Horus faded after his death, and the Imperium remembers him mainly as the Arch-Traitor. The details of his fall are told in the Horus Heresy novel series.
