Imperial Cult

The Imperial Cult is the official state religion of the Imperium, centred on worshipping the Emperor as a god. It’s run by the Ecclesiarchy and shapes almost every part of human life in the 41st millennium.

What the Imperial Cult actually is

The Imperial Cult, or Cult Imperialis in High Gothic, treats the Emperor as Master, Defender, and Father of Mankind. The worship really took hold after he was placed on the Golden Throne. By the 41st millennium, it’s the dominant faith in the Imperium, and heresy against it gets punished hard.

In practice, the religion and the state blur together. The cult binds humanity in service to the Emperor and the Imperium, and the Ecclesiarchy administers it. Devout followers might even make the Grand Pilgrimage to Terra at least once in their lives.

Core tenets of the Imperial Creed

The Creed is deliberately flexible. Missionaries adapt it to fit whatever culture they’re preaching to, so practices on one world can look shocking on another. The Ministorum puts up with this because standardising the faith across the whole Imperium would be impossible.

That said, the Ecclesiarchy does enforce a few non-negotiables.

  • The Emperor once walked among men, but he is, and always has been, a god.
  • He is the one true god, no matter what faiths a human followed before.
  • Purge the heretic, beware the psyker and mutant, and abhor the alien.
  • Every human has a place in the Emperor’s divine order.
  • Obey the Imperial government and your superiors without question.

End times and the Emperor’s return

A recurring theme, especially near the end of the 41st millennium, is the idea of the End Times. Many believe the Emperor will rise from the Golden Throne and finish what he started ten thousand years ago, saving the faithful from the galaxy’s evils.

It’s not all good news. The same belief holds that he’ll judge all of mankind, casting the faithless into damnation.

Space Marines and the cult

Most Space Marine Chapters don’t follow the Imperial Cult. Many keep their own cults or stick to a form of the older Imperial Truth. But some do worship the Emperor as a god, including the Black Templars, Fire Angels, Fire Hawks, Hospitallers, Red Hunters, Red Scorpions, Star Phantoms, White Consuls, Auric Paragons, Gravewardens of Piety, Ignus Hortanium, and Drakes Radiant.

Others follow their own variants. The Angels Penitent, for example, follow the Lethean Revelation.

No. Most Chapters follow their own cults or the older Imperial Truth. Only some, like the Black Templars and Red Hunters, actively follow the Imperial Cult.

What happens if you commit heresy against the Imperial Cult?

Heresy is punished severely. The cult has almost unrivaled power in the Imperium, and its tenets demand the persecution of heretics, mutants, and aliens.
