What is Ophelia VII?

Ophelia VII is a Cardinal World and Shrine World in the Ophelia system, located in Segmentum Tempestus. It’s the oldest of the Cardinal Worlds and the centre of the Adeptus Ministorum’s power outside Terra.

The entire planet is devoted to worshipping the Emperor. Its surface is covered in mile-high cathedrals and bell towers, linked by avenues lined with statues of thousands of Imperial Saints. Deep dungeons hold heretics who undergo soul-cleansing methods like arco-flagellation and death-masking.

Early history and the Great Crusade

During the Great Crusade, Ophelia VII was the site of a battle where the Emperor himself led the charge with 100 Custodians and 10,000 Imperial Fists.

Before becoming the centre of the Ministorum, Ophelia VII was the diocese of Benedin IV when he was a Cardinal. It was said to be the wealthiest planet after Terra and Mars.

Benedin IV later moved the entire Adeptus Ministorum to Ophelia VII, building vast cathedrals over 90,000 square miles and 4,000 metres high. Only the Imperial Palace on Terra surpassed them. The move gave the Ministorum distance from the High Lords of Terra and let it raise vast tithes.

Later history: Vandire and Thor

During the Age of Apostasy, Goge Vandire rose to power and caused chaos within the Imperium. His reign ended with the reforms of Sebastian Thor, who reorganized the Ecclesiarchy.

Ophelia VII remained a key Ministorum centre after the reforms, though its influence was balanced against Terra. It’s still one of the main centres of Ministorum power today.

The Adepta Sororitas and Ophelia

The Adepta Sororitas, also known as the Sisters of Battle, have their Convent Sanctorum on Ophelia VII. It’s one of their two main convents, the other being on Terra.

In the Dark Imperium era, Ophelia VII continues to serve as a major base for the Sororitas and the Ecclesiarchy. Its fortresses and cathedrals are defended by millions of faithful warriors.
