The Imperial Creed

The Imperial Creed is the official state religion of the Imperium of Man, centred on the worship of the Emperor as a god. It’s the glue that holds humanity together, and in many ways, the religion and the state are one and the same.

What is the Imperial Creed?

The Imperial Creed, also called the Cult Imperialis in High Gothic, is the dominant faith of the Imperium. It’s built on the belief that the Emperor is the Master, Defender, and Father of Mankind, and that He has always been a god.

After the Emperor was interred in the Golden Throne, worship of Him as a divine figure spread across human space. By the 41st millennium, the Creed has almost unrivaled power and influence. Heresy against it is punished severely, and the religion is administered by the Ecclesiarchy, the vast bureaucratic and military organisation also known as the Adeptus Ministorum.

Core tenets of the faith

The Creed is surprisingly flexible. Missionaries tailor it to fit the native culture and practices of each world, so what’s normal on one planet might be considered abhorrent on another. The Ministorum tolerates this range because standardising the faith across the whole Imperium would be impossible.

That said, the Ecclesiarchy does enforce a set of basic tenets that all followers are expected to accept:

  • The Emperor once walked among men, but He is, and always has been, a god.
  • The Emperor is the one true god, regardless of any past faiths a human might have followed.
  • To purge the heretic, beware the psyker and mutant, and abhor the alien.
  • Every human being has a place within the Emperor’s divine order.
  • To unquestionably obey the authority of the Imperial government and one’s superiors.

The Grand Pilgrimage and the End Times

Devout followers often undertake the Grand Pilgrimage to Terra at least once in their lives, a journey that can take years and cost everything they have. It’s a powerful expression of faith and a major part of Imperial culture.

Another common theme is the belief in the End Times, which gained momentum towards the end of the 41st millennium. Many believe the Emperor will rise from the Golden Throne and complete the work He began ten thousand years ago, delivering the faithful. But it’s also said He’ll sit in judgment of all mankind, casting those lacking in faith into damnation.

Who follows the Imperial Creed?

The vast majority of humanity follows the Creed, but not everyone. Many Space Marine Chapters keep their own cults or still observe a form of the older Imperial Truth, which rejected the Emperor’s divinity. Some Chapters do worship the Emperor as a god, including the Black Templars, Fire Angels, Fire Hawks, Hospitallers, Red Hunters, Red Scorpions, Star Phantoms, and White Consuls.

Other Chapters practice different variants of the Imperial Cult, like the Angels Penitent who follow the Lethean Revelation. So while the Creed is the official faith, there’s plenty of variation across the Imperium.

FAQ

What is the difference between the Imperial Creed and the Imperial Cult?

They’re basically the same thing. The Imperial Creed is the set of beliefs, and the Imperial Cult is the organised religion built around those beliefs. The terms are often used interchangeably.

Do all Space Marines follow the Imperial Creed?

No. Many Chapters follow their own cults or the older Imperial Truth, which doesn’t treat the Emperor as a god. Some Chapters, like the Black Templars, do follow the Imperial Creed and worship the Emperor as divine.

What are the key tenets of the Imperial Creed?

The core tenets include the Emperor’s divinity, the persecution of mutants, abhorrence of xenos, and unquestioning obedience to Imperial authority. The Creed is flexible, but these basics are enforced by the Ecclesiarchy.
