The Indomitus Crusade is the Imperium’s huge counterattack after the Great Rift tore the galaxy in half. Roboute Guilliman launched it to reclaim worlds lost to Chaos, and it’s still shaping the setting today.
History
Guilliman declared the crusade after he woke up and named himself Lord Commander of the Imperium during the Thirteenth Black Crusade. He left the Emperor’s throne room and immediately called for a reconquest, and some in the Imperium believed the idea came from the Emperor rather than from Guilliman himself.
The scale echoed the Great Crusade of old. Its first job was to push back Chaos forces and retake Imperial worlds left stranded or embattled when the Great Rift split the Emperor’s domain in two.
Opening moves focused on securing warp routes around Terra. The Grey Knights purged Ganymede of daemonic taint and turned it into a major hub-fortress. Abaddon’s forces attacked eight warp nexuses near Terra to isolate the Throneworld, forcing the crusade onto longer and riskier warp paths.
Muster came from industrial powerhouses like Terra, Mars, Jupiter, Armageddon, Bastrophol, and Shenjin. Troops were pulled from Imperium Sanctus systems that had become untenable after the Rift, which caused resentment and even mutinies, but it gave the fleets a massive pool of warriors and machines.
- Declared by Roboute Guilliman after the Thirteenth Black Crusade.
- Goal: reconquer worlds lost to Chaos after the Great Rift.
- Early focus: secure warp nexuses around Terra.
- Ganymede became a hub-fortress after daemonic cleansing.
- Forces drawn from many worlds, including Terra, Mars, and Armageddon.
Forces and organisation
The crusade isn’t one army. It’s a coalition of over a dozen Space Marine Chapters led by the Imperial Fists, plus Imperial Guard, Mechanicum, Custodes, Sisters of Battle, Imperial Navy, Skitarii, Legio Cybernetica, Collegia Titanica, Knights, a small Sisters of Silence contingent, and the new Primaris Space Marines made by Belisarius Cawl.
Because the Astronomican was disrupted by the Great Rift, the fleets could only risk short warp jumps. That shaped how the crusade moved and fought.
The crusade was split into numbered fleets. Fleet Tertius under Fleetmaster Cassandra VanLeskus was tasked with taking Olmec in Segmentum Solar, while Fleet Quintus under Fleetmaster Tronion Prasorius moved into southern Segmentum Solar.

Why it matters
The Indomitus Crusade is the Imperium’s biggest attempt to hit back after the Great Rift. It’s the reason Primaris Marines are everywhere now, and it’s the backdrop for a lot of current 40k lore.
It also shows the Imperium’s limits. Pulling troops from dying systems saved the crusade but left those worlds to fend for themselves, and the crusade still couldn’t reach everywhere at once.
