Phoenix Lords

The Phoenix Lords are the most ancient heroes of the Aeldari, immortal warriors who founded the Aspect Shrines and embody facets of their war god, Khaine. They wander the galaxy, appearing in times of desperate need, and their spirits live on inside their armour, waiting for a worthy successor to don it.

What is a Phoenix Lord?

A Phoenix Lord is an Exarch so ancient they no longer belong to any single shrine or craftworld. They’re driven by war itself, drawn instinctively to places of great danger, and they travel the Webway from world to world following the path of the Bloody-handed God.

They’re immortal in a way that’s stranger than simply not dying. When a Phoenix Lord falls, their essence lies dormant in their armour until another Aeldari warrior puts it on. If their souls resonate and the new wearer proves worthy, the two combine and the Phoenix Lord is reborn. The original personality always dominates, so the Phoenix Lord stays fundamentally the same person no matter how many bodies they’ve worn.

  • Each one embodies a single aspect of the fractured war god Khaine.
  • Their armour contains spirit stones holding the souls of everyone who has ever been that Phoenix Lord.
  • They often vanish for centuries, then reappear when they’re needed most.
  • Drukhari who saw Jain Zar revive compared the sight to a daemon forming out of the Warp.

Origins and the Fall

Some Phoenix Lords are as old as the Fall itself. They were heroes during that cataclysm and the first to bear the spirit stones of the Warrior Aspects. Asurmen is said to be the first of them, born Iliathin on a world later consumed by the Eye of Terror.

Asurmen walked the Path of the Warrior first, founded the Dire Avengers, and trained the Asurya, the first Exarchs. Those Asurya went on to create the Aspect Shrines that still exist today. It’s said that all the Phoenix Lords will fight and die together at the Rhana Dandra, the final battle between Chaos and the material universe.

Notable Phoenix Lords

No one knows exactly how many Aspect Shrines or Phoenix Lords there are, but several are well known. Asurmen, the Hand of Asur, is the first and most revered. Jain Zar, the Storm of Silence, was the first of the Asurya and is famous for her speed and the psychosonic ‘scream that steals’, which her Banshee mask turns lethal.

Baharroth, the Cry of the Wind, is the youngest and most colourful, the first to master aerial combat and the glorious omen of success in battle. Maugan Ra is his sombre counterpart. Others include Fuegan, Karandras, and Lhykhis, master of the Warp Spiders.

Why they matter

The Phoenix Lords are the living memory of the Aeldari’s warrior path. They’re more than powerful fighters, they’re the reason the Aspect Shrines exist at all, and their reappearance can turn the tide of a battle or a whole war.

Their connection to the Rhana Dandra gives them a role in the Aeldari’s end times. They’re also tied to the Ynnari storyline, though some, like Jain Zar, have distanced themselves from Yvraine and her followers.
